Chex Quest is a total conversion of the computer game Doom. This game was found in CHEX(R) cereal boxes by General Mills in 1996. After a while, this game was no longer put in CHEX(R) cereal boxes, and the game's availability plunged down until it was available for download on the Internet several years later.
In addition to the original, Digital Cafe made a sequel to Chex Quest called "Chex Quest 2". Unlike in DOOM, not every cheat code began with a certain word. While DOOM had a cheat code scheme in which every cheat started with ID, the scheme in Chex Quest was based on the names of the people in the production crew of the game, but there were a few exceptions to that scheme.
Some parameters used to start DOOM were also used to start Chex Quest. Despite Chex Quest's major changes from DOOM, there were still a few remaining relics from DOOM (e.g. levels from other DOOM episodes). Chex Quest only had the first 5 levels from DOOM convered for the game. Some leftover levels from DOOM could only be playable via the level warp parameter at startup.
Every PC speaker sound from the DOS version of DOOM was used in Chex Quest. Chex Quest was made to be a child-friendly game for all audiences although the original DOOM was rated M for Mature.
Aspects of game that replaced aspects of DOOM:
- Weapons:
- Cereal Spoon (replaced fist)
- Super Bootspork (Chainsaw)
- LAZ Device (replaced BFG-9000)
- Ammo became Zorch
- When the player got hurt, the screen flashed green instead of red.
