All Play, No Homework One scary lady... Eye-popping column from Tech Central Station from a 'charter-school' blogger, who is complaining that parents are too busy leisuring their kids to have any time to build foam molecules with them at home:

Is soccer really more important than studying? Should teachers eliminate math homework so kids can spend more time practicing karate kicks? Intelligently assigned homework of reasonable difficulty is worth the effort. In elementary school, a little homework develops good work habits, though it doesn't boost achievement. Middle and high school students learn more, especially in math, when they study more. They also prepare to learn independently - if Mom and Dad back off and let them do their own work. Limit after-school activities. Turn off the TV. There's plenty of time for homework - if it's the top priority. If you really want more, she has a blog.

I agree anyway's it might not really help you to learn because you the only way to really learn is if you really want to if your forced then it won't do any good or make them learn anything.

What homework really does is waste time with the family. Correct? because it does for me. i have to much late work that i am mainly getting pushed to do the late work insted of getting pushed to do the work issued today for it to be graded the next day!!!

I agree that we shouldn't have homework because we spend 5 days a week in school. Then when school is over teachers give us hours of homework to do and then we have no time to go outside and hang out with friends or do something active. Thats why I never personnaly never do my homework. Its that simple! I dont care get a bad mark for incomplete.

HOLY CRAP!!! it's hard to believe that the people who are making comments here, are the ones who obviously need the homework. Listen kids, skating won't amount to anything, and if you think it will, you should quit at life. Stay in school, and do your homework so someday you can have that free time that you so desire. If you work hard now you can get a good job and make money so the rest of your life is easier... makes sense huh?

I don't think we should have homework because, I go to school until about three. I go home feed our animals get some comfy clothes on and then do hours and hours of homework till about 8. then I take a shower and fix my hair till bout 9 and go 2 bed. BORING!!!!!!

i think that homework is so stupid and we dont really need it if teachers rreally could do thier jobs they wouldnt need to and they give us so much work that we have to spend all day doing it i had 1 projet so big it took me 8 hours to do and i didnt do anything eles (it ended up breaking grr) and i got in troble i hate homework and never get to see my family just homework papers

Headteacher bans homework 21/01/2005

The headteacher of a school in Wiltshire has decided to scrap homework for 12-year-olds.

Dr Patrick Hazlewood has taken the unusual step at St John's comprehensive school in Marlborough as part of a project to encourage youngsters to "love learning for its own sake".

He says homework is "a dinosaur" and has agreed to take part in the study devised by the Royal Society for the Arts to discover whether children's learning improves by challenging the traditional notion of teachers forcing knowledge upon pupils.

Dr Hazlewood explained that homework is "repetitious, generates marking that is often just a load of ticks and causes conflict at home".

He added: "The time has come to let sunshine flood through the classroom window and place the learner at the centre of all endeavour."

However, the measure has caused considerable concern among parents, who consider homework to be an important catalyst in getting their children to learn outside the classroom.

It also appears that the move conflicts with the school's stated policy, which says regular homework "is an essential element of learning and contributes to the development of sound study habits".

But Dr Hazlewood clearly no longer thinks this approach is relevant, claiming that teachers have better things to do than laboriously mark set pieces of work.

His view is that teachers are there to help develop children's natural thirst for knowledge, not to force information upon them.

Homework is not necessary as we spend 5 out of 7 days working at school and we only get 2 out of 7 days to spend with family and to do leisure things. We should spend more time on what we are going to do later on in life instead of working on things that aren't needed for later on in life.

Still amazed that so many of you are finding this posting... Don't know what to do with you all, other than to keep channels open, and post information. For example, here's a petition from students in Bristol, Connecticut, against homework. http://www.petitiononline.com/bristol/petition.html

What they write is very strong, I think:

To: Bristol Connecticut Board of Education

To Whom It May Concern: Many of the students in Bristol high schools believe that they are being given too much homework. We have eighty-four-minute periods, we do schoolwork for six hours each day. There is absolutely NO reason to give us even more of each subject every day. Anything we have for homework, we can do just as easily during class. We wouldn’t have to worry about the horror of forgetting your work at home. Everyone forgets things, we’re only human. How many times have you done something like forget to bring coupons to the grocery store, or locked yourself out of your car or house? When we become adults and get jobs, we're most likely not going to have to come home and do more of the same exact work we did all day. So why are we doing it now? Our books are extremely heavy. Studies show that if you carry more than 10-15% of your body weight on your back, it can lead to back problems. Two or three books and a binder can weigh much more than 20 pounds. So, if you were 200 pounds, this would cause no problem. However, most high school students don’t weigh that much. There are some people that weigh around 80 pounds! That means they carry at least one fourth of their body weight home each day. That is completely outrageous and very, VERY unhealthy. Now, we aren’t just a bunch of lazy teenagers, sick of doing homework. Some people’s lives don’t allow them the time to do homework correctly. Some students have to work to help make money for their families. Even though very few students do have this particular situation, they count just as much as everyone else does. Lots of students have divorced families and travel back and forth between houses. Keeping track of belongings is hard enough, never mind keeping track of books, projects, and papers. If we no longer had homework, it would also greatly decrease the amount of work teachers do on a regular basis. With all of these factors added together it makes doing homework an extremely difficult thing to manage. If you could eliminate this factor from our lives, it would be most appreciated.

Too Much Homework!! Anne-Marie W., Concord, MA

Trudging home each day after long hours of hard work and concentration, high school students all over Massachusetts face more hours of tedious schoolwork. As many as five or six hours of homework a night are not uncommon for students, leaving them little time to do much else. Assigned homework in almost every class, the students have acquired a heavy load of work by the end of the day. However, if a plan were installed in the high schools that allowed each teacher to give each of his or her classes a maximum of three hours of homework per week, students would have more time to develop themselves in other areas and a chance to lead more balanced lives.

Because of the amount of time students are obligated to spend on homework each night, other interests are undoubtedly suppressed. What happens to the student, so excited by science, who gets a new chemistry set for Christmas? He or she is so busy doing homework that the chemistry set remains unused. Or the student who can imagine no greater pleasure than curling up with a tall pile of books, what happens to this idea? He or she is also too busy studying to read. However, with the new plan of only three hours of homework a week from each teacher, these students would have time to pursue their passions.

Not only would students' minds benefit from a program like this, but their bodies would benefit as well. As American youth are generally viewed as being less physically competent than those of other countries, the extra time could be spent on exercise and physical activities. Many students do not have the time to get out and ride a bike or play outdoor sports simply because they are busy computing math problems or doing grammar exercises. As Greek philosophy states: "A sound mind and a sound body" are equally important. The stress that so much work puts on the students can in no way be helping their health either. By staying up too late frantically trying to finish assignments, many students do not get enough sleep, lowering their resistance to illness and dropping their performance levels as well.

Many also struggle to keep relationships with family and friends strong. Studies show American families, in general, do not spend enough time together, and homework significantly cuts down on the time that students can spend with their families. If a three-hour plan were installed in Massachusetts, however, students would be able to have more time with their families, which might help keep their relationships strong. As well as more family time, students would also be able to spend more time with friends, which is important in keeping emotional health in balance.

Although homework is an important teaching method, too much can keep teens from other activities and from fully developing other areas of their lives. However, if Massachusetts teachers are restricted to assigning no more than three hours of work a week, their students would be able to receive and learn things that they will never get from spending long hours on homework.

I don't think homework is as necessary as teachers try to make it seem. It can take up too much of a students time and sometimes children might have other things to do after school that they can't get done because of the amount of homework that we get.

in Hong Kong an 11 year old boy jumped 34 stories he left a note saying he was afraid to go back to school because he didn’t finish his homework, also more homework news children in Sweden spend 4.5 hours on homework about 9 hours in Hungry. the teachers over due our homework I do have a life I cant just do work after work and also after school do I really want to go home and do more school work? would you?'. What if schools would adapt playing as a way of learning. That would be fun. Life is al about playing, and so we learn. By making mistakes, creating huge successes and so becoming to know ourselves. If school is about playing, joyfull and without restrictions, life would create all answers to the problems we face now (and more). Actually, i disagree with "doom". Students shouldnt be given homework, it should only be homework if they dont manage to finish it at school. Teachers shouldnt assign homework to students because then they cant spend time with their family or go out to play. You have them working for 6 hours everyday and expect them to go home and work even more. Students already have enough work at home and shouldnt be given more.

Homework is a waste of time. You spend all day doing work and although it is a review of the work that you did in school most people cheat on it when they get to school. It is useless to the people who don't do it. Homework should be taken away. Of course you would still have tests and study for them afterschool but you wouldn't be up all night and be exhausted the next day. With any extracurricular activites, which look good for colleges, you don't have time for 5 or 6 hours of homework. It should be taken away entirely.

What makes my life as a student different is I go to a school thirty miles away from my house, until 5:00 daily. Why? It is a unique arts school, with professional programs, and is seriously the best school I've heard of. However with hour or more drives either way, and afterschool plays, creative writing reading, ballet shows, it's emensely hard to get homework done. I am up past midnight every night trying to do work. By the end of the week, on fridays, the one day we get out early, all I can do is crash on the couch downstairs. I don't have a job, I'm not in M&T so I don't have plays to be in, my whole life is my school. And I'm okay making that sacrifice for OCHSA, but it would be a lot easier with lightened homework loads. What does 5-6 hours of sleep do for a 14 year old?

Wow. I was partly against homework when i came on this forum...i read about a third of the replies and realised the obvious- homework is really important. Now am I the only well educated kid on this forum? You all hate homework, some don't do it and look how you have turned out! I get a lot more homework than a lot of you, yet i manage to keep myself as fit as ever, i have a social life- unlike you emo skating losers, and i can do my homework- but the best thing is I know how to spell and I know how to use grammar. Which many of you don't! Homework sucks, I know. When you finish year 12 you will have virtually no Homework to speak of. If you have no time to yourself, how come you are on this forum? Why don't you do stuff in the afternoon, do half your homework at night and do the rest in early morning? Too tired in the morning? Oh well, you guys have failed at life and will fail at skating if you choose to go on that path. Thank you for reassuring me I should do homework!

I do see that many people have been cursing and acting as if they "need" homework, but all they need is a spin and polish of their social skills. This is often achieved by interaction and play, which is cut away from our lives and replaced with working away at things that aren needed in later life. Think selective classes. We are placed into them because of our skills and talents. Now, just because we have brainpower, those darned old teachers have this image that we're all mindlessly obedient little "angels" who will work like machines whether or not we're told to. I agree about us kids spending 6 hours a day at school and then having to do more work, then on the weekends, then on the holidays. This leaves no time for doing what you want to do. I also agree on the fact that all those toys and games your parent spent so much money on to make you happy have been collecting dust because is you do use them, your homework would end up overdue, resulting in an angry teacher making you repeat a year and suggesting that you lack brains.

I find this blog very interesting. Many thanks to the blogger for providing the reading material.

The basic idea seems to be that there is a disconnect between type and/or amount of homework that is being assigned and the developmental stage of the child. Instead of completely getting rid of homework, why not modify homework so that it complements the child's development? For instance, a high school social studies teacher could schedule a debate on the subject of homework with the promise that the students could choose their side of the debate. If the teacher promises to abide by the outcome of the debate by assigning more or less homework, the winner(s) of the debate could see a result. The students would be motivated. The results would be tangible. With a short-term, tangible goal toward which to work, the homework -- research -- would be valuable to the students.

Also, why don't high school college prep teachers distribute a syllabus? In college, every class had a syllabus. I was able to schedule my homework around my life so that I was never behind, even if I was sick, involved in an extra-curricular activity, or had to go to work. As someone who also worked and participated in extra-curricular activities in high school, I honestly believe that my homework would have been more valuable to me if it had been goal-oriented and if I had been able to plan it around other activities.

I agree wholeheartedly that busy work is wasteful. Instead, why should we not provide students with real challenges that can motivate them instead of with drudgery? I think teachers should assign smaller amounts of tedious homework, but greater amounts of hands-on activity. In doing so, they should allow the student to tailor the homework schedule to his or her life so that the homework is more likely to be done and so that it is more meaningful for the student.

I have to take Calculus..how the fuck will that shit help me in life? secondy college is so expensive so that the government can make you in high debt, once your in debt you'll have to get a job to pay it off. Now, obviously if you went to a "good" school then your debt is unimaginable....well there you go you'll probably pay loans till you mid 30s. Education here is a money making scheme. Don't get me wrong I love to learn, but learn what i don't want to is bs. please don't be fooled to believe that education is a good thing. Learning is but not education. Our education system is making students ignorant dummies, who are losing their creativity. Can you believe that our schooling system is taking recess away? The only reason the government says college is the best way to go is cuz they want to make money off you and they know that we the people are stupid enough to believe that only college can give us a goodJust don't be fooled to believe that college is the only way. Learn on your own. And yes the only reason why our education system has valued homework so much is so that stupid kids can spend time doing homework and forget about the real world, so kids can be brainwashed to think that their time spent doing homework will pay off. Who cares about grades?

Ok, don't get me wrong I hate doing homework. I'd much rather be hanging out with my great friends, or family, or playing sports or watching TV or just being lazy. But you just have to DEAL WITH IT! As kids we still have MANY less responsibilities than our parents do & a heck of a lot more free time! I have a job, I'm in sports every season, I have a lot of friends that I do stuff with outside of school, I am close to my family, but I still find time to do my homework and not complain. Just suck it up is all I'm saying...

And grades DO matter.. if you get good grades, you get into a good college, which leads to a good job which leads to $$$ :)

Ok, let's see. Yes, homework does "suck" but if you pay attention to the people complaining on here are obviously somewhat on the verge of needing "special" help for which they are mentally disabled if all they want to do is have sex and get AIDS and ruin their lives before the age of 15. There is also a plain view that homework is needed since about 95% of the people commenting on here couldn't spell if their lives depended on it.

I know it sounds like i am "for" homework, but I'm not, I honestly think homework is an unnecessary waste of time and should be used scarcely. Homework seems to only cause conflict between students, family, and school, which all may be avoided if there wasn't homework as much or even at all.

I hope that someone that matters will read this and take into consideration our overall achievements with and without homework and decide which is the better alternative.

most contries these days are recomending that kids should exercise more and lay of junk food because of obseity. here they are lecuturing us about how we should eat and exercise more and then they shove hours of homework for us to do. if we dont do our homework we get a phone call home, incomplete grade, failure, failure to suceed. they threaten us with these facts..FYI thats BLACK MAILING!!!! if teachers give us no homework we will succeed. exercising allows us to relive stress and anxiety which leads to: obseity, and inability to study. homework should be place there for those who whish to do it not for those who wish to exercise and releave our stress..DOWN WITH HOMEWORK

Im doin a public speaking thing and guess wat my subject is... it why we shouldnt do hw. Last year i came second in my class and i got to go in front of the skool but it had 2 b a stupid story but this year im gonna try 2 convince the judges from the skool board why we shouldnt have hw so im gonna fukin work my ass off 2 b 1st and get in. i admit that hw is needed 4 some people but holy shit were at skool almost all day, the average kid sleeps 12 hours, plus eating hours, we have maybe max 1 hr a day 4 free time if u do all ur hw. Ok projects are okay cause theyre essential but every1 would do better cause we wouldnt b losing marks 4 not doin hw...if ur doin bad in skool then u should b studying but if ur 2 retarded 2 notice if ur gonna fail and dont study, its your problem. I need defensive things i could say about why we shouldnt do hw. ive read this site...most of it is just people dissing hw but some have some good points for both sides. I personnally dont always do all my hw cause im involved in cadets....ive got music team thursdays n sundays, theater tuesdays, military march on sunday afternoons so i find hw is bullshit. pls email me if u have any good points at babybaldwin@hotmail.com
