Biography

Coad, born in Richmond, British Columbia and raised in Vernon, British Columbia, has resided in the Vancouver Quadra riding since 2001. She is currently studying philosophy and political science at the University of British Columbia after graduating from the Douglas College Theatre Program. On March 11, 2007, Rebecca was nominated by the Vancouver Quadra NDP to be their candidate in the upcoming federal election.

Before winning the nomination to represent Vancouver Quadra, Coad's interest in social justice issues was developed through her volunteer commitments both locally and internationally. She has acted as organizer/fundraiser for seveal organizations, including the University of British Columbia's Oxfam chapter, the Stephen Lewis Foundation, and AIDS Vancouver. After spending time teaching English abroad, she expanded her experience in, and commitment to, education by working with residents of the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver at the Carnegie Community Center, both in the kitchen and as a discussion facilitator for Humanities 101. This program provides a year long, barrier-free liberal arts and social science education for residents of the Downtown Eastside who do not have access to post-secondary education. Coad is also active with the UBC NDP.
