UNIPhD is an international doctoral fellowship programme offered by the University of Padua in Italy. The programme is co-funded by the European Union through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) COFUND scheme and provides fully funded positions for Early Stage Researchers (ESRs). It combines interdisciplinary research, international mobility, and intersectoral training within a 36-month employment-based PhD structure.

Overview

[edit]

UNIPhD aims to provide structured doctoral training that bridges academic and non-academic sectors. Fellows undertake original research projects, receive supervision from faculty at the University of Padua, and take part in advanced skills training and mandatory secondments to external partners. The programme is organised to promote excellence, mobility, and transferable skills in line with MSCA principles.

History

[edit]

The programme was initiated by the University of Padua to strengthen its international doctoral training offer and to attract global research talent. Through MSCA COFUND support the university established a call for a cohort of fully funded fellows distributed across several doctoral programmes. The initiative was designed to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration and to link academic research with industry and cultural institutions.

Structure and design

[edit]

UNIPhD follows a "training through research" model. Fellows are offered 36-month employment contracts rather than scholarships. Each fellow proposes a research project in agreement with a Padua supervisor and is required to undertake at least one secondment in an academic or non-academic institution. The programme includes formal training in transferable skills such as research ethics, project management, intellectual property, entrepreneurship, and science communication.

Features

[edit]
  • 50 fully funded fellowships across multiple doctoral programmes.
  • 36-month employment contracts with living, mobility, and (if applicable) family allowances.
  • Interdisciplinary and intersectoral training, with mandatory secondments.
  • Supervision by University of Padua faculty with access to research groups and facilities.
  • Training workshops, seminars, and career development activities.
  • Selection through a competitive peer-reviewed process in line with MSCA rules.

Eligibility

[edit]

Applicants must satisfy MSCA Early Stage Researcher criteria. Typical requirements include having less than four years of full-time research experience, not holding a doctoral degree at the time of application, and complying with MSCA mobility rules (for example, not having lived or worked in Italy for more than 12 months in the three years prior to the call deadline). The programme is open to applicants of any nationality.

Adoption

[edit]

The UNIPhD programme has attracted applicants internationally and is promoted through doctoral networks, mobility platforms, and academic collaborations. Participating research groups report benefits such as increased internationalisation, interdisciplinary exchange, and strengthened ties with external partners through required secondments.

Criticism

[edit]

Criticism is limited but includes the programme's high competitiveness and the administrative burden of preparing detailed research proposals before admission. Some applicants note the practical difficulties of international relocation and the potential disruption of research continuity caused by mandatory secondments. Despite these concerns, the programme is generally regarded as offering high-quality doctoral training.

Other uses of the name

[edit]

The name UniPhD is also used by a private India-based academic support company operating at uniphd.com. According to the company's website, it provides services including thesis and dissertation assistance, PhD proposal drafting, statistical and qualitative data analysis, plagiarism correction and similarity checks, and journal publication support.[1] The company publishes dedicated pages describing thesis writing support[2], research proposal services[3], data analysis offerings[4], and journal publication assistance[5]. These commercial uses of the name can occasionally cause confusion with the University of Padua's official UNIPhD programme.
