Singing with Legends (Chinese: 我们的歌), alternately known as Our Song, is a singing variety show that pairs off rising stars with role-model singers who compete to find the best pair over 12 episodes. It was produced by SMG Shanghai TV and first premiered in China on October 27, 2019 [1].
The original concept of the show was inspired by the collaboration between Fei Yu-ching and Jay Chou on the song 千里之外 (Far Away)[2]. It sought to bridge the generations between the music industry and uplift the industry as a collective. This first season was dedicated to Fei Yu-ching as the last variety show he participated in before his retirement [3].
The "Y" logo is thematically important to the show as representation of their motto. The stage design in a "Y" shape, initial "Y" buttons to create pairs, and "Y" attachments to the singers' microphones represent the convergence of generations to promote the exchange of ideas. They fuse into a new combination after mutually agreeing to the partnership by pressing the "Y" button [3].
Show format
The singers are randomized into group A and group B to manage the . The show alternates which group is featured in the episode until the groups are slowly eliminated. The last three pairs are the sole focus of the final episodes.
To pick their partners, veteran singers anonymously listen to the rookie singers audition and decide on who to perform the initial duet with. Both singers do not know the identity of their stage partner due to a divider separating them. They undergo a blind duet. Both singers have rehearsed their parts separately but unaware how the other person will sing. After the performance, the singers decide whether to press the "Y" button to agree to form partners or not press it to have a chance to pair off with a different singer.
In the tournament episodes, duos face off in audience ranked votes. The most popular group is named the champion of the episode. The other three pairs sing additional songs to decide the second, third and fourth place winners. Episodes 7 and 8 were team battles between Groups A and B. The four singers on each of the assigned teams perform three songs as a group and do not need to stay in their original pairs. The groups needed to decide the number of participants and the order of the performances to garner the most audience votes. The groups with the lowest votes are eliminated.
The top four original pair moves onto the next phase of the competition along with two singers as audience picks from the eliminated singers to form a new duo. As such, 5 pairs proceeded to the semi-finals. The groups sing in a tournament style seen in the earlier episodes. The group with the lowest overall ranking in the semi-final episodes is eliminated. In the finals, the top three teams perform two songs to decide on the champion.

Reception
In China, the first season garnered critical success. According to the Weibo Variety statistics, the show's main topic board received over 7.3 billion views [4]. Including the collective subcategories on Weibo, Singing with Legends received a collective 17.7 billion views after the show finished airing.
Singing with Legends received international attention. In October 2020, the show debuted at the Cannes International Series Festival in France to popular acclaim [5]. The producers signed the rights to use the show's format for use in Germany (Sony Pictures Entertainment), Spain (Grupo Granga), USA (Warner Bros.), Italy (Garbo Produzionis) and Vietnam (iFORMATS) [6].
Of these countries, Spain released "Dúos increíbles" to channel LA1 of TVE in 2022 [7]. The winners of this show received a trophy and 25,000 euros to donate to an NGO. Notably, Spain preserved the live instrumental format of the original Chinese show with a team of 23 musicians playing live in each episode [7]. "Dúos increíbles" also aired a second season in 2023 [8]. Vietnam released "Bài hát của chúng ta" (Our Song Vietnam) in 2024 with similar success [9].
