Dr. Muhammad Iftikhar Shafi (Urdu: محمد افتخار شفیع) is a Pakistani Urdu poet, literary critic, translator, researcher and columnist.[1] His poetry, research and criticism have earned him recognition as one of the leading literary voices from Pakistan and gloabl Urdu speaking community.

Early life and education

Muhammad Iftikhar Shafi was born in Noorshah, near Sahiwal, to Mian Muhammad Shafi and Khurshid Begum. He received his early education in Sahiwal and completed his matriculation from Government Higher Secondary School Noorshah in 1990, followed by intermediate studies at Government Postgraduate College Sahiwal in 1992. He obtained a B.A. from Government Postgraduate College Sahiwal in 1994, an M.A. in Urdu (1996), and an LL.B. (2003) from Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan.

He later earned an M.Phil. (2009) and a Ph.D. (2016) in Urdu from Allama Iqbal Open University Islamabad. His doctoral thesis, titled *Klassiki Urdu Ghazal Mein Sarapa Nigari ki Riwayat (Quli Qutub Shah se Daagh Dehlvi tak)*, examined the tradition of aesthetic description in classical Urdu poetry.

In 2024, Dr. Shafi completed Iqbal Studies Postdoctoral Research Program (IPRP) at The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, titled Sharq Shanasi: Allama Iqbal aur Edward Said ke Fikri Abaad (“Orientalism: The Intellectual Dimensions of Iqbal and Edward Said”).

Academic career

Dr. Shafi began teaching as Lecturer in Urdu at Punjab College Multan (2003–2005), then at Government Degree College Fort Abbas (2005–2006), and later joined Government Postgraduate College Sahiwal in 2006. He was appointed Associate Professor in 2016 and became Professor of Urdu in May 2022. He currently serves as Head of the Department of Urdu and Vice Principal (Academics) at Government Postgraduate College Sahiwal.

He has also served as Chief Warden, Director of the Societies Board, and Editor‑in‑Chief of the college literary journal *Sahiwal*.

Literary and scholarly work

Dr. Shafi’s creative and critical range spans poetry, research, translation and column writing. His ghazals and nazms are known for fusing classical tradition with modern sensibility. He contributes the literary and cultural column Sarmaya‑e‑Iftikhar to the national daily Nawa-i-waqt.

He has presented papers at national and international literary conferences, including events organized by the Pakistan Academy of Letters, Allama Iqbal Open University, Minhaj University Lahore, and Islamia University of Bahawalpur. He has delivered keynote addresses on Urdu poetry, Iqbal Studies, and Palestinian literature.

His research articles have appeared in HEC‑recognized journals such as Zaban‑o‑Adab, Bazyafat, Al‑Zubair, Almas, and Oriental College Magazine (Punjab University).

Works

Dr. Shafi has written, edited and translated over twenty books.

Forthcoming works include *Sharq Shanasi: Allama Iqbal aur Edward Said ke Fikri Abaad*, *Sar‑maya‑e‑Iftikhar (Collected Columns)*, and *Masnui Zehant (Artificial Intelligence and Poetry)*. His work is available on Rekhta. Rekhta Foundation has established a free website Rekhta.org with the objective of promoting and disseminating Urdu literature, especially Urdu poetry to an audience beyond those conversant with the Urdu script.

He has supervised numerous M.A. and M.Phil. dissertations across Pakistani universities and one post‑doctoral project at Islamia University of Bahawalpur.

Dr. Shafi has represented Pakistan at numerous national and international literary and academic conferences, including events organized by the Pakistan Academy of Letters, Allama Iqbal Open University, and various universities across Punjab and Sindh. He has delivered keynote lectures on topics such as Urdu Adab Mein Falasteen, Allama Iqbal aur Edward Said, and Urdu Shairi mein Mili Tashakhus.

Dr. Shafi’s scholarship on Majeed Amjad and Urdu ghazal has been praised by senior scholars such as Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi, Shamsur Rahman Faruqi, Intizar Hussain, Aslam Ansari, Zafar Iqbal, and Ludmila Vassilyeva. Multiple M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. dissertations have been written on his life and works at universities in Lahore, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Okara, and Bahawalpur.
