Madi Jobarteh (b. August 1971) is The Gambia's most prominent human rights defender and pro-democracy activist.[1][2][3]

Jobarteh is founder and executive director of the recently-established Edward Francis Small Centre for Rights and Justice (EFSCRJ) in The Gambia.[4] Prior to that, he served as country director for the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, a position he relinquished over disagreements on the Israel/Palestine conflict.[5]
His human rights and pro-democracy stance have put him at odds with the government of Adama Barrow in The Gambia. He has challenged the the Gambian government over allegations of theft of public resources and corruption.[6] Jobarteh has been arrested by the authorities on numerous occasions under politically-motivated charges.[7][8]
Early life and education
Jobarteh was born in The Gambia in August 1971.
He is an alumnus of the University of Ghana, Legon, where he read Linguistics and Philosophy.[9]
