The Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI), formerly known as the Association of Visual Language Interpreters of Canada (AVLIC), is the national, non-profit certifying body for professional American Sign Language-English, Quebec Sign Language-French interpreters in Canada.[1][2]
Founded
Established in 1979, CASLI is the only organization in Canada administering the Canadian Evaluation System (CES) to certify ASL–English interpreters.[3][4]
Mission & Certification
CASLI’s mission is to advance interpreting standards, support members, and uphold its Code of Ethics.[3] Certification through CES leads to national recognition, and the Professional Conduct Review ensures accountability.[3]
Governance & Partnerships
The organization operates under a national board with regional affiliate chapters (e.g., AQILS in Quebec). CASLI also maintains formal partnerships, such as with AQILS since 2016 and with Deaf-led organizations like CAD and CCSD.
Why It Matters
CASLI ensures:
- Rigorous certification to guarantee interpreter competence;
- Ethical standards and professional accountability;
- National representation for sign language interpreters and collaboration with Deaf communities.[2][5]
