On this WikiProject Stub sorting subpage, you can propose new stub types (please read the procedures beforehand!), as well as the reorganization and subdivision of existing stub types. You can also discuss anything else related to stubs on the talk page.

Proposing new stub types – procedure

Important: If you wish to propose the creation of a stub article you've come to the wrong place. If you don't have a username yourself, please go to WP:AFC for proposing a new article. If you already have a username, you can create the article yourself. If you don't know how, add {{Helpme}} to your user talk page to request help from other editors. This page only deals with stub templates and categories; we cannot help you with creating articles.

Proposing new stub types
If you wish to propose a new stub category and template, please follow these procedures:
  1. Check the List of stub types or under Category:Stub categories to make sure that your proposed new stub does not already exist.
  2. List it at the top of the current month's section, under a header, like the ones shown (if any). Sign it with a datestamp (~~~~).
    • Please bear in mind that a stub category isn't about the importance or notability of the topic!
  3. Find a good number[1] of stub articles, as many as you can, that will fit that template. You may use this tool to scan through categories; tagged stubs are always in Category:All stub articles and transclude {{asbox}}. Each of these articles can be:
    • currently marked with {{stub}};
    • currently marked with another type of stub tag (in which case you should justify why your tag is better for the article than the current one);
    • a stub whose categorisation is highly ambiguous or questionable;
    • not marked as a stub.
  4. If you use any category scan (from the tool mentioned above or from any other), please link to it so that other users can confirm that the results are still accurate.
  5. Others may do the same, if they so desire.
  6. 5 days after listing it here, if there is general approval or no objection, go ahead and create the new category and/or template following the format on Wikipedia:Stub. List the new stub type on the stub types list in an appropriate section. If consensus is not clear, or discussion is still ongoing, the proposal will remain open until consensus can be reached.
  7. If you wish to propose a stub type which does not currently have 60 articles that could use it, you may propose an upmerged template in a similar way. An upmerged template would feed into currently existing stub categories until such time that there are enough stubs for a separate stub category. At that point a category for it may be separately proposed. Some times, it may be difficult to be sure how many stubs would get a tag - in which case you can also start with an upmerged stub tag until you're sure there are enough.

DO NOT place a proposal here for any stub type which has already been created and is being discussed at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion. The proposal page is only for stub types that have not yet been created, and it is better to keep any discussion of such stub types in one place rather than splitting it between different pages. Wikipedia:Categories for discussion is the correct page for proposals to delete a stub type.

^ Good number means about 60 articles or more, or 30 or more if it is the primary stub type of a WikiProject, though this figure may vary from case to case.

"Speedy creation"

A stub type may be proposed for "speedy creation" if it meets one of the following criteria:

  • S1 - the creation of a category for which an approved upmerged template already exists and is now in use on more than 60 articles.
  • S2 - the creation of an upmerged national-level template for a subject in which other such national-level templates currently exist (e.g., X-bio-stub, X-hist-stub, or X-geo-stub, where X is the name of an internationally widely recognised country) or other instances where a clearly established pattern of similar subtypes exists. The proposed topic may not be controversial in scope.

Nearly oversized, could do with a good sort, a good start to that would be a new category

Awami politician stubs

Currently in the mid 650s though I am guessing a sort through all Bangladeshi politician stubs would find more I propose a split by region as we already have a similar split for the nation, that is under-utilised. Obviously usual caveats over templates only until we have 60 articles. Please note that although I dont like the AL for Awami League this is what the existing template uses.

National Assembly of Hungary member stubs

Inorganic compound stubs

Category:Inorganic compound stubs is oversized; I think this sub-template and category should be created to help diffuse it:

1940s American Western (genre) film stubs

British Columbia interior geo stubs

Pakistan MNA's

Members of the National Assembly of Pakistan is currently just under 700, we have split the Punjab regional parliment by party, I propose the same here. One problem is that the categorisation by party in Punjab was a bit sparse and required a hand sort, I assume the problem exists here as well as only 400 articles are in the MNA by party category. Based on that i propose the following with the usual templates first caveat:

Idk what to call this, but I found a bunch of members of the Parliament of Finland that are stubs (over 300 articles). What should it be called? How do the following look, each party has over 60 stubs and I feel there are still some unmarked stubs for each party, should take out 250 articles.

Splitting a huge film stub

1910s drama film stubs is huge. An overwhelming majority of the transclusions are from American silent drama films; there are over 900 articles awaiting the new template {{1910s-US-drama-film-stub}} and subcategory 1910s American drama film stubs - OpalYosutebito 『talk』 『articles I want to eat』 17:25, 29 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

We have a split of painting stubs by century, some of these have already been split by decade, given the 17th and 16th century categories are over 600 I propose we atleast create the by decade templates for these, with categories for those that pass the 60 mark, as this would leave the 18th century still by century I propose we do the same for that category as well. So I propose the following for each decade of the three centuries:

Was our largest none tree of life category. It looks like someone started to split by State, not sure this is the best way to go, but it is the thing that most articles seem to have in them even if not categorized there. Per the Belgian and French split we have tended to go with US-cycling-bio-[date]-stub rather than having the date first. Sports organization stubs

I will be looking at tiding up the sport org category, before doing so could I propose the following templates, potentially upmerged to fooian organisation stubs, fooian sport stubs and sport organization stubs. I feel that this category is currently under used and lots of sports organisations are lost in nation specific sport stub cats, sport specific cats, nation org stub cats and maybe even other places, this will help as otherwise we could be triple tagging articles. We already have a US category so these are feasible, but I will request just the following templates for the usual suspects when it comes to sport categories to see how things look before requesting categories and any further templates:

Myriapod stubs

Oversized category, this subphylum has 4 classes, two of which should be easily viable for categories. I propose the following

I have used the titles of the articles, in the case of millipede(an FA) and Centipede(a GA) rather than the latin names as that seems to make sense, I have no objection to the creation of {{Diplopoda-stub}} and {{Chilopoda-stub}} as redirects. Although proposed the last two would have permcats with a total of 17 articles in them so I doubt will be needed just yet, but editors have been known to occasionally create a load of articles so I propose them just in case. This family level split is just off the oversized list, we have two tribe level subcats and one genus level subcat, I can't find any obvious splits at these levels but the permcats also have subfamily splits which do give viable stub cats for the following which I would like to propose:

A number of countries have subcats that are starting to get large, I would like to split these before they get on the oversize list. IN each case the midfielder stub category is over 600 but if I recall correctly we normally split the defender, midfielder and forward categories by dob at the same time so I propose templates and where viable categories in the following formats for any decades requiring templates and the categories iff they reach 60:

I have not added France or Jura to the categories as I think France is about the only country to use Arrondissement and there appears to be no overlap so I think we are safe here. Swaziland / Eswatini

We appear to have a number of templates that are named Swaziland-blah-stub, some are redirects to the Eswatini-blah stub which is not a problem however we also have some that are either the target of a redirected Eswatini-blah stub or there is no Eswatini-blah-stub. Unless there is a more complex system that we need to follow I propose the following:

1-Reversing the redirects on the following stubs:

2-Creating new Eswatini templates to have as targets for existing Swaziland templates where these don't already exist

My feeling is that we shouldn't deal with these within stub sorting, but in the wider context of all templates and cats related to Swaziland / Eswatini - that is, an all-encompassing WP:CFD. I note from your link to Category:Swaziland moving to Category:Eswatini almost all categories were moved and further up the page the template categories were also moved. Looking through the template category, where a number of stub templates are missing, all the templates use the country name, Eswatini in this case, except the royal family where that tree uses the demonym in general, Swazi in this case. Both of these taken together seem to be the all-encompassing discussion on whether we should use Eswatini or Swaziland. Also a read of the Talk page for Eswatini Talk:Eswatini/Archive_3#h-Requested_move_24_October_2018-2018-10-24T12:35:00.000Z shows the discussion on this and a clarification on the demonym. Category is getting close to oversize we have one (undersized) by district subcat and two upmerged templates. I can't see any districts reaching threshold for there own categories so would like to propose the following by division system with the existing templates upmerged to the relevant district (and possibly the deletion of the existing category). Another option is to go with the by district templates and just upmerge these to the division categories, as we have already done in Utter Pradesh.

Another oversized geo stub, can't find any individual counties that are over the threshold but this article Western Coal Field seems to produce a viable group if we take the 10 counties wholly in this region this should take out 150 articles, enough for a category and enough to remove it from the oversized list.   • Support can't see any issues with this one. One comment on your petscan search if you change the level from 0 to 1 it gives the category and its direct subcats, change it to two and that adds the subcats of the subcats, so you dont need to list the category 4 times, once with out the | and once with |1,|2 and |3 you can just change the depth to 3.(Hope that makes sense and helps). We have 3 oversized categories( Florida, Minnesota and New Hampshire). Based on other states (OH and NY) I propose splitting out those that served in the various state legislatures, ( a quick look using petscan suggests a big enough overlap in at least two of these states so that we could have a category for those that served in both houses, but I am not going down that road)

Another oversized category, I can see two ways of splitting this from the perm cat's subcats, either by decade(not widely used) or by the court that heard it it therefore propose splitting this by the court with the following templates and categories where these pass 60, Being neither an American nor an expert on this field I am open to changin this to by year/decade if people see that as a better fit:

I don't think this is necessary, TBH. The SCOTUS-stub category is not "overstuffed"; there are a lot of cases. We should only subcategorize the stub if we foresee people actually doing work based on the subcategorization. I find it difficult to believe someone would sit down and go "It is my goal to make sure the Hughes Court's cases do not have stubs." Additionally, someone interested in such a project could just use Category Intersection to achieve this. No need to write it into templates. But, hypothetically, if we were to do this, it should not be a separate template for each justice. It should be {{SCOTUS-stub|Roberts}}, {{SCOTUS-stub|Hughes}}, etc. lethargilistic (talk) 02:44, 10 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
