Cốc Cốc browser (Vietnamese: [kəwk˧˥ kəwk˧˥]; meaning "knock knock"[6] and previously Cờ Rôm+ Vietnamese: [kə̀ː rōm kəwŋ˨˩˨]; lit.'Chrome+') is a freeware web browser focused on the Vietnamese market, developed by Vietnamese company Coc Coc Company Ltd and based on Chromium open source code.[7] Cốc Cốc is available for Windows, Windows Phone, Android, and macOS operating systems and supports both English and Vietnamese. Cốc Cốc also has its own search engine service.[8]

The first version of Coc Coc browser was launched on December 14, 2012, under the name Cờ Rôm+ . This version has an interface similar to Google Chrome and adds two distinct features: high-speed file downloading and audio/video file downloading from multimedia entertainment websites.

The official version of the browser was released five months later on May 14, 2013.[1] Currently, Coc Coc has versions for Windows, MacOS, Android, iOS/iPadOS operating systems. According to official sources from Coc Coc, there are 80,000 installations of Coc Coc browser every day. The browser currently has 3 million daily users with more than 25 million new tab openings.

After only 2 months of official launch, the number of Coc Coc users has surpassed Opera [2] in Vietnam. Old Coc Coc logo In September and December 2013, the number of Coc Coc users surpassed and took the lead over Safari browser [3]. In February 2014, Coc Coc entered the top 3 most popular browsers in Vietnam according to StatCounter data with a market share of 10.94%.[4] On April 2, 2014, Coc Coc+ officially changed its name to Coc Coc browser and updated its new logo. This decision was to unify the brand between the company's main products including: Coc Coc browser, Coc Coc search engine and Maps application [5]. In September 2014, Coc Coc surpassed Mozila Firefox to become the 2nd most popular browser in Vietnam[6] In June 2020, Coc Coc on Mobile became the 4th most popular browser in the Vietnamese market with 11.7 million installs, behind only Safari, Chrome and Samsung Internet Browser In October 2020, Coc Coc had 25 million daily users on both Desktop and Mobile platforms.

Features

Automatically add accents

When users type a text without accents, Coc Coc will give Vietnamese suggestions with corresponding accents with high accuracy, thanks to the intelligent analysis system installed on Coc Coc's servers. Because this feature is only installed for normal input boxes, users do not have to worry about the risk of their passwords being leaked.

The Cốc Cốc development team hopes that the automatic accent addition solution will help Vietnamese users significantly speed up common tasks using the browser such as: composing E-mail, chatting, writing articles on blogs, forums, social networks... According to the development team's calculations, this feature will help increase text typing speed by up to 50% for normal users (who are not capable of typing with 10 fingers) and 20% for advanced users.[9]

Go to Facebook

To support stable access to Facebook, Coc Coc is equipped with a special domain name resolution reserve mechanism, allowing automatic processing of domain name resolution system (DNS), to resolve common website access obstacles in other browsers. Thanks to that, Coc Coc users will have unlimited web surfing experiences like when they use regular browsers with additional software such as Hotspot Shield or Ultrasulf.[10]

Download Media feature

Coc Coc has the ability to automatically capture links, allowing users to download audio and video files when listening to music, watching movies,... on multimedia entertainment websites. For sites that offer more than one format, such as YouTube, you can choose the download option with full HD or HD, FLV, 3GP,... quality. Another convenience is the ability to download entire music albums on the spot. Users of the regular download feature can choose to download quickly with just one click.[11][12]

Download Fast

Coc Coc allows users to download files faster thanks to the integration of a multi-threaded file download solution, similar to the popular data download acceleration software today, IDM. With 8 parallel threads, Coc Coc's file download speed can be 8 times faster than normal. This is one of the outstanding improvements of Coc Coc since the launch of the first version.[12] The actual speed will depend on the connection speed and bandwidth limit of the file hosting server.[13]

Download Torrent

Cốc Cốc can download torrent files directly on the browser without the need for third-party software such as BitTorrent or MTorrent.[14][15] In addition, users can also transfer files from a computer with Coc Coc installed to a phone using Coc Coc Mobile browser.[16][17]

Spelling

In order to enhance Vietnamese support, when users compose any text on the browser, Coc Coc will automatically detect spelling errors, underline them in red, and suggest ways to write correct, with 94% accuracy. Users can edit themselves, or double-click on the misspelled word to have the browser automatically correct it. Tests showed that every

Market share

On August 2017, Cốc Cốc reached its peak market share in desktop usage, achieving 32.54%.[19] However, its market share began to decline thereafter. By August 2020, its share had dropped to 16.42%.[20]

As of August 2024, the desktop market share of Cốc Cốc was recorded at 11.41%.[21]

By November 2024, the combined market share of Cốc Cốc across all platforms (desktop, mobile, and others) had fallen to 3.67%, while Google Chrome dominated the Vietnamese browser market with a 64.44% share.[22] Coc Coc has captured 0.1% of the world's web mobile browser market share in 2024.

User feedback and issues

In 2021, the ex-CEO of Cốc Cốc confessed that at least from 2017, the company was engaged in selling advertising to illegal gambling websites and other activities suspected to have criminal nature.[23]
