  • Comment: I think the journal clearly meets NJournal, but there's still some work to do. History section, complete list of editors in chief, some better references. Nobody (talk) 09:03, 11 April 2025 (UTC)

Language Learning & Technology (LLT) is a peer-reviewed, open access academic journal of Language Learning, Language Teaching and Language Technology published online by the National Foreign Language Resource Center (NFLRC) at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. The Language Learning & Technology (journal) is currently sponsored and funded by the NFLRC as well as the Center for Language & Technology (CLT) at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. The journals focus is to provide both foreign and second language educators with research on problems related to technology and language education. LLT’s focus is not strictly restricted to technology but rather has a wide scope that encompasses all issues related to language learning and language teaching and seeks to see how those issues are affected or enhanced by the use of digital technology.[1]

History

Language Learning & Technology was founded in July 1997 with Mark Warschauer as it's founder and first editor, who in January 1998 was joined by Lucinda Hart-Gonzalez as co-editor.[2][3]

Founding and Vision

It was created as the first fully online, open-access, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the intersection of learning and technology. The journal's mission was (and remains) to provide high-quality, scholarly work that examines how digital tools and media impact second and foreign language acquisition.

Publishing Model

From its inception, LLT has been committed to open access, offering its content freely online without subscription fees or paywalls. Authors retain copyright of their work under a Creative Commons license. LLT does not charge article processing fees (APCs), making it accessible to researchers globally—particularly those from under-resourced institutions.

Reception and Impact

Language Learning & Technology has been recognized as a leading journal in the field of computer-assisted language learning (CALL). A 2017 statement from the Computer-Assisted Language Instruction Consortium (CALICO) identified LLT as one of “the foremost international journals in the field,” highlighting its rigorous peer review and high global ranking in educational technology journals. [4]

In a 2019 editorial in the journal ReCALL, published by Cambridge University Press, LLT was described as being “ahead of the pack” among major journals in CALL.[5]

The journal has also consistently ranked in the top quartile (Q1) of linguistics and education journals according to the Scimago Journal Rank and is indexed in the Social Sciences Citation Index with a 2023 impact factor of 3.5.[6]

Abstracting and indexing

The journal is abstracted and indexed in:[7]

According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2023 impact factor of 3.5.[9]
