Template:Academic institution Draft:Department of Laser Systems and Advanced Technologies (LTFT) of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute is a structural unit of the E.O. Paton Educational and Research Institute of Material Science and Welding of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute of NTUU "KPI", which trains higher education applicants:

- first (bachelor's) level in the educational and professional program Welding Engineering, Laser and Related Technologies, specialty 131 Applied Mechanics;

- second (master's) level in the educational and professional program Welding Engineering, Laser and Related Technologies, specialty 131 Applied Mechanics;

- second (master's) level in the educational and scientific program Applied Mechanics, specialty 131 Applied Mechanics;

- third (educational and scientific) level (PhD) in the educational and scientific program Applied Mechanics, specialty 131 Applied Mechanics.

The department is a leading organization in the development of non-traditional methods of material processing both in Ukraine and within the post-Soviet space. Based on the scientific and intellectual potential of the department in the field of the latest materials processing technologies, the Research Institute of Laser Engineering and Technology was established in 1993.

History

Since the foundation of KPI in 1898, the mechanical department of the institute was supposed to teach the discipline "Metal Technology" and conduct laboratory and practical classes as part of the training of mechanical engineers. Training workshops in mechanics were built in 1900, but documentary evidence of the activity of this branch of study has been lost. During World War II, the department, which at that time had a fairly large machine tool base, was evacuated to Tashkent. The equipment and specialists returned to Kyiv only in 1944. The first head of the department upon his return was Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR V. E. Vasiliev, then Dean of the Faculty of Chemical Engineering, of which the department had been a part since 1938. After the war, the department became part of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, and was headed by Associate Professor M. F. Savin, who held this position until 1958. From 1958 to 1973, Associate Professor B. S. Navrotsky was invited to head the department. From 1960 to 1966, the department trained specialists in engineering and pedagogical fields. During this time, 144 engineering teachers were graduated. Three of them - Vitaly Dzhemelinsky, Vadym Sharapov and Anatoly Skuratovsky worked at the department. In 1973, the department was headed by a well-known specialist in the strength of materials, Professor Volodymyr Khilchevsky. This period was marked by the expansion of the scope of scientific and educational interests of the department. The department received a new name - "Department of Technology of Structural Materials and Materials Science" and the status of a general engineering department. Cooperation with the Department of Strength of Materials of KPI, the Institute of Strength Problems and the Institute of Materials Science Problems of the NAS of Ukraine reached a new level.

In 1990, due to the transfer of an entire direction of scientific work in the field of special technologies to the department, the department significantly expanded and from general engineering it turned into a graduate department, and also received a new name: "Department of Laser Technology, Machine Design and Materials Science".

The head of the department was Professor Volodymyr Kovalenko, one of the most prominent specialists in Ukraine in the field of laser technology and non-traditional material processing. Back in 1984, thanks to his initiative, the specialty "Technology and Equipment for Laser Processing of Materials" was first established in Ukraine. After the unification of two directions of scientific work at the Department of LTKM, a symbiosis of classical and modern materials processing technologies was formed.

Structurally, the department was divided into three educational sections: laser technology, technology of structural materials, and machine parts. Together with Professor Kovalenko, the scientific and teaching staff of the department was replenished with a whole group of doctors and candidates of sciences, among whom it is worth noting Leonid Golovko, Valery Kotlyarov, Viktor Romanenko, Vitaly Garashchuk, Mykola Anyakin, Leonid Oleshchuk and others.

In 1993, the Research Institute of Laser Engineering and Technology was established on the basis of the department, which continued work in the field of cutting-edge technologies at a new level. In connection with the urgency of solving the problem of eliminating the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster, specialists of the department and the Research Institute of Laser Engineering and Technology began research in the field of applying laser technology in dismantling the Shelter facility (block "B").

The greatest successes of the department and the acquisition of the widest knowledge are associated with the name of Volodymyr Kovalenko - he was the first Soviet and post-Soviet scientist to become a full member of the Laser Institute of America. In 1996, Kovalenko was invited by the same organization to the International Editorial Board to prepare the International Handbook on Laser Technology (LIA Industrial Laser Handbook, Magnolia Publishing Inc., Orlando, Florida, USA), together with Professor Golovko they prepared eight paragraphs of this publication. In 1997, Volodymyr Serhiyovych, as an expert from Ukraine, participated in the 52nd Session of the UN General Assembly, where the issues of international support for measures to eliminate the consequences of the Chernobyl accident were considered. Thanks to his efforts in developing the scientific and research component of the department and selecting highly qualified teachers, the Department of Laser Materials and Materials Science and Engineering became a leading organization in the development of non-traditional methods of material processing both in Ukraine and within the post-Soviet space. The Ministry of Education of Ukraine recognized the department as the main one in coordinating research and development in the field of mechanical engineering, advanced technologies and the aerospace complex.

In 2009, the department received a new name - "Laser Engineering and Advanced Technologies", and Volodymyr Kovalenko was replaced as head of the department by professor Ihor Kryvtsun.

In 2019, the department became one of the founders[1] of the newly established E.O. Paton Educational and Research Institute of Material Science and Welding[2].
