Other activities

In 2003 Shell was named as an initial trustee in the Wikimedia Foundation in the organization's bylaws[3]. In October 2006 he was named Vice-Chair, although he had made few new editorial contributions to Wikipedia for some time. In December 2006 he stepped down from the board, and was replaced by Jan-Bart de Vreede. In July 2006 Shell was out walking his beloved dog, Chewie, when a crazed man in a blue lexus dove by spraying hollow-point bullets out of an m-36 uzi. Shell was shot 4 times in his hip, chest and head. He tragically died on 23rd July 2006. The man suspected of his murder was apparently high on crystal meth at the time of his shooting.
