Data Management Association
The Data Management Association (DAMA), formerly known as the Data Administration Management Association,[1] is a global not-for-profit organization which aims to advance concepts and practices of information management and data management.[2][3] It describes itself as a vendor-independent, all-volunteer organization,[4] with a membership consisting of technical and business professionals. Its international branch is called DAMA International (or DAMA-I), alongside various regional or national branches worldwide.[5]
History
The Data Management Association International was founded in 1980 in Los Angeles,[4] when several local data management groups began to unite under a common structure.[6] Other early chapters were established in San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis, New York, and Washington D.C. Since 1989, DAMA International has hosted annual conferences in the United States, later expanding to Europe and Australia to further build the data management community.[7]
In 1993, DAMA collaborated with the Institute for Certification of Computing Professionals (ICCP) to define the data management knowledge base. This collaboration ultimately led to the introduction of DAMA’s own Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) exam in 2004.[8]
Data Management Body of Knowledge
DAMA has published the Data Management Body of Knowledge (DMBOK), which compiles best practices and a common vernacular for enterprise data management. The first edition (DAMA-DMBOK) was published on November 1, 2009,[9][10] the second edition (DAMA-DMBOK2) was published on July 1, 2017,[11] and the Revised edition (DAMA-DMBOK2 rev.2) appeared on March 19, 2019.[12]
DMBOK has been likened to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) and the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK)[13] in terms of its scope and structure. Areas covered include data architecture, security, quality, modeling, governance,[14] big data, and data science.[15] Third-party analysts have recognized the DMBOK as one of the most widely known data management maturity frameworks, alongside DCAM, CMMI CERT-RMM (Data Management Maturity Model) by CMMI, IBM Data Governance Council Maturity model, Stanford Data Governance Maturity Model, Gartner’s Enterprise Information Management Maturity Model.[16]
Certification
DAMA offers a professional data management certification known as the Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP),[17] based on the DMBOK as its primary reference material.[18] Industry publications have listed the CDMP among the top data management credentials, citing its broad coverage of data governance, quality, and strategy.[19] DAMA’s certification program originated through collaboration with professional computing associations and remains a competing option among several available data management certifications.[20]
