Cobalt (not to be mistaken for the chemical element Cobalt), also known as Cobalt.tools (stylized as cobalt.tools) is a free and open source website for downloading videos and audio from YouTube, Bluesky, Dailymotion, Facebook, Instagram, Loom, Odnoklassniki, Pinterest, Reddit, Rutube, Snapchat, SoundCloud, Streamable, TikTok, Tumblr, Twitch, Twitter, Vimeo, Vkontakte and Xiaohongshu.[1] It is licensed under AGPL-3.0[2]

Features

[edit]

Cobalt is big on privacy, so it offers a list of features like tunneling, which can hide your IP address, browser information and bypass local network restrictions by passing the file through a metaphorical encrypted "tunnel".[3] Remuxing, which fixes any issues with the uploaded file so it is compatible with older software like Windows Media Player or Vegas Pro, it is also processed locally.[4]

It also has some customizability with file name types, which there are four types, Classic, Basic, Pretty and Nerdy.

  1. Classic: youtube_dQw4w9WgXcQ_1920x1080_h264.mp4
  2. Basic: Video Title (1080p, h264).mp4
  3. Pretty: Video Title (1080p, h264, youtube).mp4
  4. Nerdy: Video Title (1080p, h264, youtube, dQw4w9WgXcQ).mp4
