The Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (simplified Chinese: 中国科学院计算技术研究所; traditional Chinese: 中國科學院計算技術研究所; pinyin: Zhōngguó kēxuéyuàn jìsuàn jìshù yánjiū suǒ), abbreviated as ICT, is a computer science and technology research institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It was established in 1956 and is China's first specialized institution engaged in computer research. The institute developed the first general-purpose computer in China, spin-offed the Institute of Software |Institute of Software, Lenovo, Dawning, Loongson, etc. [1][2] [3]
History
When the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was established in 1956, it rented Building 3 of Xiyuan Hotel (now Xiyuan Hotel) as a temporary residence for offices and laboratories, and moved to Zhongguancun in February 1958.[4]: 100
In 1964, ICT successfully produced China's first self-developed large digital computer, the 119. The 119 was a core technology in facilitating China's first successful nuclear weapon test (Project 596), also in 1964.[4]: 101 [5]
The institute also became the R&D base of China's high-performance computers. China's first general-purpose CPU chip was also born here.[3]
The Institute of Computing Technology has successively spin-offed several research institutes and high-tech enterprises, including the Institute of Software |Institute of Software, Lenovo, Dawning, Loongson and Cambricon.[1] [2]
Research
The mission of the institute is to advance scientific discoveries and technological innovations in computer science and technology, strives to become a world-class research institute, and to contribute to the economic development and social sustainability of China and the world. [3]
Teaching
The institute also hosts the School of Computer Science with the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), offering various undergraduate, master and PhD programs in computer science and technology. [3]
