"I'm on One" is a song by American hip hop artist DJ Khaled, released as the second single from his fifth studio album, We the Best Forever. The hip hop song features Canadian rapper Drake and American rappers Rick Ross and Lil Wayne and features production from Canadian producers T-Minus, Nikhil S. and Noah "40" Shebib. It was released for digital download in the United States on May 20, 2011. Remixes and freestyles were released from rappers such as Tyga, Meek Mill, Jamie Drastik, including other rappers.

Background

T-Minus tells his side of the record that came to fruition.

“Again, it all started from me being in the studio with [Kromatik]. Me and him just sat down on a keyboard, came up with that melody line together and I built it from there. It took about 45 minutes, maybe an hour to build that track out and find the right sounds. The lead melody is actually a combination of two synth sounds. It’s a Nexus sound. I used to use Nexus heavily in a lot of my production. A lot of dance producers use it, which is why it’s such a heavy sound. It just worked.

“When I first made the track, it was pretty slow. I think I had it at like 65 BPM. It was dragging. I actually made it for [Take Care], but I guess Drake had other plans. It’s funny because that [original] beat was inspired by another Drake record that I heard years ago. I can’t even think of the name right now, but just the tempo of it and how it made me feel when I heard it.

“I sent the beat out to Drake and his response was, ‘Yo, speed it up for me.’ I sped it up and sent it back, and his response again was, ‘Speed it up a little more.’ So I sent it back and he was like, ‘That’s perfect.’

“He held onto the track for a bit and nothing came from it. Long story short, Khaled went to Drake to get a record for his project [We the Best Forever]. Drake pretty much recorded and did his entire section—the hook and verse—in about an hour, if I’m not mistaken. He bodied that shit. He just knew what to do. That’s the thing with Drake: when he’s on a hot streak, he can just go. He’s a hitmaker.

“Man, I can’t even remember [when I found out Rick Ross and Lil Wayne were also on the song]. It was maybe a month or two before [it was released]. But it was crazy to know that they were all on one song. And it was crazy to see the success of it. I have to credit the artists on that, too, because Drake was on top of his game at the time, so I think him being on the record as well probably attracted a lot of attention.

“That’s definitely one of the most memorable records for me. It’s actually one of my favorite records that I’ve ever produced. Definitely in the top three, I’d have to say. Just hearing your music in the club and having people get excited about it, it’s like you’re a part of something special, like you’re part of that person’s life in some way. And it all started in my little basement, so it’s really an honor.”

The song peaked at number ten on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the first top-ten hit in the United States for both DJ Khaled and Rick Ross. The single was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for sales of over 500,000 copies.[1]

Music video

DJ Khaled shot the music video for his "I'm On One" single featuring Drake, Rick Ross, and Lil' Wayne. The visual was directed by Gil Green, with Birdman, Ace Hood, Wale, Gunplay and Mack Maine making cameos. The visual was shot in Miami in Drake's Condo House over Memorial Day Weekend. Various scenes in the video include the controversial drink Four Loko. The official music video for "I'm on One" was premiered during the BET Awards 2011. A video for the song's remix features a cameo from Ace Hood.

Critical reception

"I'm on One" was nominated at the 2012 Grammy Awards for the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration award, being Khaled and Ross' first nomination, Drake's 8th and Lil Wayne's 12th, but lost to "Number One" by R. Kelly featuring Keri Hilson.[2] XXL named this song the second best song of 2011.[3] Billboard also ranked it at number 17 on their "Critics' Picks: 20 Best Songs of 2011."[4]

Chart performance

I'm on One peaked at number ten on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming his sixth highest-peaking song and first top-ten hit in the United States for both DJ Khaled and Rick Ross. The song also topped the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for 11 weeks, and the Hot Rap Songs chart for 13 consecutive weeks, which is the fourth-longest streak on that chart, behind Drake's "Best I Ever Had" at 15 weeks, Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" at 17 and Missy Elliott's "Hot Boyz", featuring Nas, Eve and Q-Tip at 18. On July 22, 2011, the single was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for sales of over 500,000 copies.[1] As of May 2014, the song has sold 1,875,000 copies in the United States.[5]
