Graduation from seminary in 1963 led to ordination in the Methodist Church and a Master of Divinity degree from Garrett Theological Seminary.

In 1967, an appointment to "Minister of Education"[8] at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church prevented open opposition to the war in Viet Nam and, in 1971, a transfer to the Loring Nicollet Center for street ministry ended after he performed the marriage of Jack Baker and Michael McConnell.
