Thorough revision of the old article

[edit]

The old article, after a concise but useful introduction, contained two very simple examples and a somewhat longer section on "Selection, crossover, elitism and mutation", which does not belong here as there are separate articles on this. The important relations of different chromosome representations to variation operators and fitness determination and the related genotype-phenotype mapping were not presented.

Therefore, the article has been thoroughly revised and expanded, with more examples and, most importantly, more citations. Also, the references to genetic representation and genotype-phenotype mapping have been presented with due brevity. All further details can be taken from the literature given.
