DeepLearning.AI is an education technology company. It was founded in 2017 by British-American computer scientist Andrew Ng following his departure from Baidu and his experience with Google Brain.

As of December 2024, DeepLearning.AI offers over 50 free short courses alongside paid specializations, reaching more than 7 million students worldwide. Its flagship program is the Deep Learning Specialization on Coursera (which was also founded by Ng), which covers neural networks, deep learning, and other fundamental AI concepts. DeepLearning.AI has established partnerships with major technology companies to develop specialized courses in areas like generative AI, large language models, and sustainable computing.

DeepLearning.AI also publishes The Batch, a weekly newsletter written by Ng himself that provides curated AI news and insights for both technical and non-technical readers.

History

Andrew Ng in 2017

DeepLearning.AI was founded in 2017 by Andrew Ng following his tenure as Chief Scientist at Baidu and co-founder of Google Brain.[1][2] The company was initially announced on June 22, 2017, shortly after Ng's departure from Baidu in March of that year.[3] Development began in May 2017, with Stanford University teaching assistants Kian Katanforoosh and Younes Mourri contributing to the project. The platform utilized Python as its primary programming language and TensorFlow as its software framework.[4]

Launched on August 8, 2017 with three initial courses on Coursera, Deeplearning.AI expanded upon Ng's earlier machine learning course that had attracted over 1.8 million students since 2011.[4] The new "Deep Learning Specialization" was designed with a more technical focus, requiring basic Python programming knowledge and fundamental machine learning concepts as prerequisites.[5] The curriculum emphasized foundational concepts taught in low-level programming languages rather than specific corporate frameworks.[5]

Deeplearning.AI was established with the mission of democratizing AI education, driven by Ng's view of artificial intelligence as a transformative technology comparable to electricity. Deeplearning.AI aimed to address the disparity between the increasing demand for deep learning expertise and its limited availability in research laboratories and universities.[5] By 2024, DeepLearning.AI had developed partnerships with major technology companies including Amazon AWS, NVIDIA, Google Cloud, and Intel.[6][7]

As of 2024, Deeplearning.AI has reached over 7 million students globally, offering more than 50 free short courses alongside its paid specializations and longer programs.[8][3]

Courses

Deep Learning Specialization (2017)

The flagship program of DeepLearning.AI is the "Deep Learning Specialization", which consists of five courses hosted on Coursera:[9]

AI for Everyone (2019)

"AI for Everyone" is a non-technical course launched in early 2019, designed for business professionals including executives, product managers, and other non-technical specialists. The course, announced in November 2018, was developed in response to the increasing adoption of AI technologies across industries, with McKinsey Global Institute forecasting that 70% of companies would adopt some form of AI by 2030. The course is aimed at business leaders to consider which problems to target with AI, the limitations of machine learning, and how to effectively implement AI technologies in their organizations.[10]

  • Reasoning with o1 (2024) — In partnership with OpenAI, focusing on advanced reasoning and prompting techniques for the o1 model.[11]
  • LLMs as Operating Systems: Agent Memory (2024) — Collaboration with Letta, teaching memory management for AI agents.[12]
  • Safe and Reliable AI via Guardrails (2024) — partnership with Guardrails AI, focusing on mitigating LLM failure modes.[13]

Technical applications and tools

  • Multimodal RAG: Chat with Videos (2024) — Collaboration with Intel, using the BridgeTower model for video content analysis.[14]
  • Building AI Applications with Haystack (2024) — Partnership with Deepset, teaching flexible AI solution development.[15]
  • Embedding Models: From Architecture to Implementation (2024) — Collaboration with Vectara, covering word, sentence, and cross-encoder models.[16]

Programming and development

  • AI Python for Beginners (2024) — Entry-level course focusing on practical Python applications with AI assistance.[17]
  • Carbon Aware Computing for GenAI Developers (2024) — With Google Cloud, teaching sustainable AI development practices.[16]
  • Function Calling and Data Extraction with LLMs (2024) — Partnership with NexusflowX, focusing on LLM application development.[16]
