Rajnish Bajpai is an Indian social entrepreneur and software engineer based in California, USA, specializing in Generative AI, Artificial general intelligence, platform engineering, IoT, and agile software development methodologies.[1] He is the Founder and Chairman of SmartGaon Development Foundation, a non-profit organization working towards the development of rural areas in India, transforming the villages into self-sufficient and technology-enabled communities. His work focuses on integrating modern amenities with traditional rural lifestyles, thereby improving education, sanitation, and employment opportunities in underserved areas by applying the latest technology and innovation.[2][3]

He is the first Non-Resident Indian (NRI) whose social efforts have been acknowledged by Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi during the national public addressal radio program, Mann Ki Baat in 2018.[4][5]

He also serves as an advisor for various IEEE International Technical Conferences and startups, focusing on innovation and emerging technologies.[6][7]

Early life and education

[edit]

Bajpai was born and grew up in Taudhakpur, a village in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, his initial schooling was in a village school, and later he completed his secondary education at Saraswati Vidya Mandir Inter college.[8]

He is married to Ojaswi Mishra who is a software professional. In 2004, he completed his Bachelor of Engineering, Computer Science from Rajiv Gandhi Prodyogiki Vishwavidyalaya, ⁣Bhopal, and his Master’s degree from IIIT Hyderabad. He has also received an honorary doctorate (Doctor Honoris Causa) from The Crown University International Chartered in Business Administration.[9]

Social work

[edit]

After his graduation in 2006, Bajpai joined Synopsys, where he worked in the Hyderabad division before relocating to Mountain View, California.[10]

In 2015, Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi addressed the Indian community in San Jose, California, urging them to give back to their homeland and emphasizing that Indians abroad should be seen as "brain gain" rather than "brain drain".[11][12][13] This speech inspired Bajpai, who was among the audience at the event, to work towards his motherland and start social initiatives to develop the rural villages of India.[10][14]

In 2017, Bajpai and Yogesh Sahu founded the SmartGaon Development Foundation, headquartered in Mumbai. The organization provides an outreach platform for Non-Profits and private/public/government organizations of various sectors to come together and work towards the Integrated Development of rural infrastructure of India.[15] The organization's initiatives also include the education system development in Indian villages including farmer empowerment.[16][17]

He designed an app called SmartGaon with his friend Yogesh Sahu that connects an entire village population with the world digitally and is available in English and Hindi languages. The main objective of the app is to transform the village into a sanitized, self-reliant & digitally empowered society.[18][19]

The organization is in the strategic support of the Government of India's initiatives including Digital India, Swachh Bharat Mission, Make in India, and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.[20][21]

Through the SmartGaon initiative, Taudhakpur, a remote village in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, has been transformed into a modern, digitized community and became the first "SmartGaon" (smart village) of India.[22] The village now features smart facilities, including an efficient waste management system, streetlights, CCTV cameras, over 242 toilets, a Wi-Fi zone, and 20 hours of uninterrupted power supply and connectivity.[23] Additionally, Padariya Thoban village in Damoh district, Madhya Pradesh, has also been transformed into a Smart Village, enhancing the quality of life for its residents and becoming the first "SmartGaon" in Madhya Pradesh.[24]
