IPMX

IPMX (Internet Protocol Media Experience) is a suite of standards and open specifications that provide an interoperable way to transport compressed and uncompressed video, audio, and related metadata over data networks within a multi-vendor IP audiovisual system[1]. IPMX is based on the SMPTE 2110 [2][3] and AES67 suite of standards, and the related AMWA Networked Media Open Specifications (NMOS) and Video Services Forum (VSF) Technical Recommendations (TR-10) which add specific capabilities for Pro AV (professional audio visual) workflows[4][5][6].


Overview

The IPMX suite of standards and open specifications is designed to transport and control media, including 4Kp60 video with 4:4:4 subsampled color, over standard Ethernet networks, with very low latency[7]. IPMX supports SD resolutions and is ready for 8K[8] resolutions and beyond[9]. Additional capabilities include HDMI support, NMOS discovery and registration, I/O management, and compressed media using the JPEG XS video coding system. IPMX can be used on a network with synchronous sources locked with Precision Time Protocol (PTP) or with asynchronous sources[10].

History

In 2019 the Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) launched the IPMX roadmap[11]. In Spring 2021 an HDCP specification was released by the HDCP organization to help guarantee interoperability and maximize compatibility with protected content[12].
