Definition
- Tangible User Interface can be defined as a interface, which places a greater emphasis on touch and physical environment or its element between human and digital information. It is a broad aspect Human Computer Interaction that includes haptic Interface or tactile Interface.
Research
- The notion of Tangible User Interface introduced by Hiroshi Ishii who is one of professor in MIT Media Laboratory and pilot research projects of the Tangible Media Group. According to his research project, Tangible Bits give physical form to digital information, making bits directly manipulable and perceptible. Tangible bits pursues seamless coupling between these two very different worlds of bits and atoms. (Tangible Bits: Towards Seamless Interfaces between People, Bits and Atoms 1997)[1]
Example
- “Topobo” is like a LEGO block. However, unlike the Lego block, it memories the movement, save and replay it. In other words, any movements that “Topobo” performed can be repeated. Using a passive and active element, various movements can be developed. With actions like pushing, pulling and twisting, “Topobo” can perform this developed movement repeatedly.
