One of the "Old Eight" universities of civil engineering and architecture in China, formerly a university directly under the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry of China. XAUAT is located in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, and its history can be traced back to Beiyang University in 1895. In 1956, during the adjustment of higher education departments, the departments (faculties) of civil engineering, architecture, and environment from the former Northeast Institute of Technology, Northwest Institute of Technology, Qingdao Institute of Technology, and Sunan Industrial College merged to form Xi'an Institute of Architecture and Engineering. In 1959 and 1963, it was renamed Xi'an Metallurgical College and Xi'an Metallurgical Architecture College respectively, and in March 1994, it was renamed to its current name.[citation needed]
