One of the "Old Eight" universities of civil engineering and architecture in China, formerly a university directly under the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry of China. XAUAT is located in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, and its history can be traced back to Beiyang University in 1895. In 1956, during the adjustment of higher education departments, the departments (faculties) of civil engineering, architecture, and environment from the former Northeast Institute of Technology, Northwest Institute of Technology, Qingdao Institute of Technology, and Sunan Industrial College merged to form Xi'an Institute of Architecture and Engineering. In 1959 and 1963, it was renamed Xi'an Metallurgical College and Xi'an Metallurgical Architecture College respectively, and in March 1994, it was renamed to its current name.
Education and Research
XAUAT is one of the first universities authorized by the National Council to confer doctoral, master's, and bachelor's degrees. Having three original national key disciplines (structural engineering, environmental engineering, architectural design and theory), it has been selected as a "Double First Class" cultivating university in Shaanxi Province for two consecutive rounds, and architecture has been selected as a "Double First Class" cultivating discipline in Shaanxi Province.
XAUAT currently has 21 colleges and 67 undergraduate majors. Among them, 27 majors including Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, Urban Underground Space Engineering, Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Engineering Management, Materials Science and Engineering, Material Forming and Control Engineering, Environmental Design, Building Environment and Energy Application Engineering, Building Electrical and Intelligent, Cultural Industry Management, Metallurgical Engineering, Transportation, Historical Building Protection Engineering, Business Administration, Mechanical Design and Manufacturing and Automation, Computer Science and Technology, Information Management and Information Systems, Automation, Sculpture, Environmental Science, Visual Communication Design, Engineering Mechanics, and Social Sports Guidance and Management have been selected as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and 35 majors have been selected as first-class undergraduate major construction sites in Shaanxi Province. Sixteen majors including architecture, civil engineering, engineering management, urban and rural planning, building environment and energy application engineering, water supply and drainage science and engineering, environmental engineering, materials science and engineering, metallurgical engineering, computer science and technology, functional materials, mechanical design and manufacturing and automation, mining engineering, automation, transportation, and mineral processing engineering have successively passed the national professional evaluation and certification.
XAUAT has one national key laboratory for green buildings, one national international science and technology cooperation base, one national think tank, one national achievement research and promotion centre, two national and local joint engineering research centres, one provincial and ministerial collaborative innovation centre, one national technology transfer demonstration institution, two science and technology education bases, five national experimental teaching demonstration centres/virtual simulation experimental teaching centres, and three A-level qualified design and research institutes. Shaanxi Province has established the "Shaanxi Circular Economy Engineering Technology Institute", "Shaanxi New Urbanization and Living Environment Research Institute", and "Shaanxi Membrane Separation Technology Research Institute" based on schools.[1]
History
In 1895, the Department of Civil Engineering of Beiyang University,[2] which was established in the 21st year of Qing Guangxu, the Department of Civil Engineering of Qingdao University of Technology, which was established in 1952 (its predecessor was the Department of Civil Engineering of Shandong University Hall, which was established in 1901), and the Department of Civil Engineering and the Department of Architectural Arts of Suzhou Industrial College, which was established in Jiangsu Province in 1911 (the first major of architecture in the history of China's specialist education), were merged to form Xi'an College of Architectural Engineering in the early days of the merger.
During the third national faculty reorganization in 1956, the Department of Civil Engineering and Department of Architecture of Northeastern University (the first undergraduate architecture department in the history of Chinese higher education), which was founded in 1923 and 1928, was merged with the Department of Civil Engineering of Northwest Polytechnic in 1938 (Northwest Polytechnic was formed by the merger of the engineering colleges of Beiyang University, Beiping University, Northeastern University and Jiaozuo Polytechnic, which were moved to Shaanxi at the beginning of the war), which was the first undergraduate architecture institution of higher learning in Northwest China. In 1959, the name was changed to Xi'an Metallurgical Institute. In 1963, the name was changed to Xi'an Institute of Metallurgy and Architecture. In November 1981, approved by the State Council, the university became one of the first units in China to award doctoral and master's degrees. On March 8, 1994, the name was changed for the third time to Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In 1998, the university was transferred to the People's Government of Shaanxi Province for management.
