What is Overpass[1]?

Overpass (Overpass turbo[2]) is a web based data mining tool for OpenStreetMap.[3]

It runs any kind of Overpass API query and shows the results on an interactive map. Beginners may find the wizard a good place to start exploring the platform, as using it can sometimes get technical quite quickly.[4] [5]

What is an API?[6]

API is an acronym for Application Programming Interface. APIs are mechanisms that enable two software components to communicate with each other using a set of definitions and protocols.[7]

Introduction to the Overpass API.[8]

The Overpass API ( formerly known as OSM Server Side scripting, or OSM3S before 2011) is a read- only API that serves up custom selected parts of the OSM map data. It acts as a database over the web: The client sends a querry to the API and gets back the data set that corresponds to the query.[9]
