"Here We Go... Again" is a song by the Canadian singer-songwriter the Weeknd, from his fifth studio album, Dawn FM (2022). It features the American rapper Tyler, the Creator and was written by the Weeknd alongside its producers Masamune "Rex" Kudo, Bruce Johnston, Brian Kennedy, Benny Bock, and Charlie Coffeen, with Tyler, the Creator and Christian Love receiving writing credits.
Background and release
Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys revealed to the Los Angeles Times that around six to eight months before the song's release, he and Christian Love went to the producer Rex Kudo's house. After Kudo sung with Johnston, the vocals were played for the Weeknd, who liked it; Johnston got writing credits for the song. The Weeknd used some of the melodies and harmonies sung by Johnston and Love in "Here We Go... Again".[1]
In an August 2021 interview with GQ, the Weeknd expressed interest in collaborating with Tyler, the Creator, stating, "I got mad love for Tyler, the Creator, and what he's doing right now — he's somebody that I really admire, because he wears his feelings on his sleeve."[2]
The Weeknd announced his fifth studio album, Dawn FM, on January 3, 2022, with Tyler, the Creator revealed as a feature on the album.[3] The tracklist, which listed the song, was revealed on January 5, and the album was released on January 7.[4]
Composition and lyrics
"Here We Go... Again" is a soft-rock ballad.[1] It is a beatless song,[5] supported by keyboards.[6]
On the first verse, the Weeknd sings about his success, including his performance at the Super Bowl LV halftime show, but also sings about an ex-lover who has settled for someone the Weeknd describes as basic and faceless. He claims that not only did he love her, he also made her scream like Neve Campbell.[7][8] Tyler's verse adds onto the Weeknd's verse, talking about his doubts of love, but is willing to marry, only if his lover signs a prenuptial agreement.[8][9] Following the song's release, many people interpreted the Weeknd's verse to be about the American actress Angelina Jolie, due to the line, "My new girl, she a movie star".[10] The two were also spotted together numerous times throughout 2021.[11]
Commercial performance
Following the release of Dawn FM, "Here We Go... Again" entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 52 on the chart dated January 21, 2022, the seventh highest charting track.[12]
