The Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC) is responsible for operating and deploying high performance scientific computing. The CPHC, in 2016, joined the petaflop club when the CSIR unveiled the fastest computer in Africa [1]. Called Lengau, which is a Setswana word for Cheetah[2], these machines are measured in terms of floating operations per second, or FLOPS. Petaflop machines were used to to model the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus during the COVID-19 pandemic. These computing resources are a key player in South Africa for academic and industry research[3]. The CHPC is part of the | National Integrated Cyberinfrastructure System(NCIS), and is supported by the South AfricanDepartment_of_Science_and_Innovation Department of Science and Innovation (DSI)
