Autonomous community?

The article includes the following claim in the second sentence of the lede:

Nevertheless, the Mixtec have remained an autonomous community; indeed, they remain one of the last autonomous Mesoamerican indigenous groups.

Unfortunately, 'autonomous community' only links to Autonomous communities of Spain, which is clearly in error. I've therefore removed the link. The article needs to clarify precisely what is meant by saying that the Mixtec are an autonomous community? What sort of autonomy do they have? Is it some sort of self-government under Mexico's constitution, or something cultural? None of the related articles appear to explain this, and it's rather important that Wikipedia be clearer on these matters. --86.175.60.75 (talk) 11:22, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
