Physics Forums is a question and answer Internet forum that allows users to ask, answer and comment on grade-school through graduate-level science questions. In addition, Physics Forums hosts the Insights Blog[1] which is a collaborative blog sourced from verified experts on the community.
Physics Forums hosts discussions on science and math topics ranging from Classical physics to Quantum mechanics and Precalculus to Topology.
History
Physics Forums was started as a school project in the spring of 2001 by Greg Bernhardt[2] nearing the end of his senior year of high school.
In 2004 Physics Forums hosted the official forums for physicist Michio Kaku.[3]
In 2005 Physics Forums entered content partnerships with Scientific American magazine.[4]
In 2010 Physics Forums won the “People’s Choice” award for best Q&A online physics community by physics.org.[5]
In 2022 Physics Forums acquired mathhelpboards.org and merged the community in Physics Forums.[6]
Notable members and blog authors past and present include John C. Baez[7], Urs Schreiber[8], Antony Garrett Lisi [9]
Physics Forums blogs and discussions have been referenced in Newsweek[10], Mental Floss[11] and Gizmodo.[12]
Notable citations in research papers
F´ısica de Part´ıculas no Ensino M´edio Parte II: F´ısica Nuclear[13], Particle Physics in High School Part I: Quantum Electrodynamics[14], 'Leading clocks lag' and the de Broglie wavelength[15], Foundations of quantum physics II. The thermal interpretation[16], Foundations of quantum physics III. Measurement[17], An Improved Configuration for Logging Trucks in Montana[18]
Moderation practices
Physics Forums employs moderation policies designed to ensure the education and promotion of science as taught and widely accepted. The policies also aim to encourage quality, productive and civil discussions.
Technical details
Physics Forums discussions are run on customized XenForo software and Insights blog is run using WordPress.
