Desmodium perplexum is a species of flowering plant in the legume family Fabaceae. It is native to eastern North America.
Description
Desmodium perplexum is a herbaceous perennial plant.
Taxonomy
Desmodium perplexum was first described by the American botanist Bernice Schubert in 1950.[4] The specific name perplexum is from the Latin adjective perplexus, which means "confused".
The American physician, botanist, and politician William Darlington described Desmodium dillenii in 1837.[5] However, the American botanist Bernice Schubert rejected the name as a nomen confusum in 1950.[4][6] In an attempt to resolve the confusion, Schubert split the taxon into two distinct taxa, one of which was newly described as Desmodium perplexum.[2] The other taxon was given the name Desmodium glabellum (Michx.) DC.[7] As of February 2024[update], the name Desmodium dillenii Darl. is a synonym for Desmodium glabellum (Michx.) DC.[8]
Desmodium perplexum is a member of the Desmodium paniculatum complex, a group of closely related taxa that includes Desmodium paniculatum, Desmodium glabellum, Desmodium perplexum, and Desmodium fernaldii. The synonym Desmodium dillenii is also a member of this group.[6]
Distribution and habitat
Desmodium perplexum is native to eastern North America.[9]
