The Midwest Independent System Operator (also known as THE MISO) monitor 920,000 miles of the high voltage transmission system through out the midwest. THE MISO operates one of the largest real time energy markets in the world.

The main function of THE MISO is its reliability function. System operators known as Reliability Coordinators and Reliability Anaylst monitor the system 24/7. The RC uses a model of the system and and calculate power flows across the country. The use of the power flow model give the ability to calculate parrall flows caused by line outages and predict overloads before they occur.
