Dehancer is a color grading software product that specializes in film emulation. The product is an OFX plugin for photo and video editors, and an application for iPhone. The software is developed by Dehanсer LTD, a company registered in the UK.

Early history

Dehancer's story begins in the fall of 2014 after the release of the first product. It was a Photoshop action jokingly called The Degrader (short for "degradation") and reproducing typical image processing operations. This action essentially deteriorated the images - distorted colors, cut off shadows, lowered saturation, making them aesthetically better.

In the wake of growing popularity, version 2.0 was released, which also added options for precise toning to correct the error of auto white balance correction.

Degradr logo, 2015

The first full-fledged application was Degradr for iPhone, released in June 2015.[1] It was a "smart camera" that processed pictures as if they were taken on film. Technically, it was a development of the ideas for Photoshop action, but using more intelligent algorithms and in real time. In addition to image processing functions, Degradr also made it possible to share images on social networks.[2]

After this, work began on a new version of the application. Degradr 2 was supposed to be a complete reworking of previous versions. The usability and design of the application, mathematical models and algorithms had to be improved. The main idea was to give the images the look and aesthetics of real film, with all its specifics - depth, grain, bloom, halation etc. To achieve this, it was necessary to develop a new sampling system.

It took about five years to develop the next version. The choice of technology for the core of the project was cornerstone. To work with real film, a laboratory was needed, which was difficult to find, because by the mid-2010s, photographic film was going through hard times. Due to rising film prices and the increasing popularity of digital cameras, processing and printing images from analog media is becoming an increasingly less profitable business. Working with film becomes a matter for film studios and enthusiasts.[3][4]

To carry out the research, SREDA film laboratory[5] was chosen, which was engaged in processing, cutting and repackaging of photographic film (their own SFL brand) and had all the necessary equipment and specialists to support exotic processes.[6]

At this stage, the company was developing its own engineering software for creating profiles - for which experiments were carried out on shooting color targets on film, developing, scanning and optical printing on black-and-white and color photographic paper.

The first commercial product was Dehancer OFX 1.0 plugin for DaVinci Resolve, it was released on January 15, 2020. From that moment on, the company began to take on its current form.

Technology

Film grain example

Dehancer's film emulation technique is based on the principle of understanding the image as consisting of grain - just like in real film, where the image is stored in a layer of photographic emulsion.

When shooting with real film, silver halide crystals react with light, darkening or leaving parts of the image light. Different grain sizes, reflections from the camera or the film itself and other artifacts - all this forms a special film aesthetic that cannot be confused with anything else.

The Dehancer decomposes the processed image into grains, and then assembles it back in accordance with the selected film profile based on a microcontrast map.

To achieve greater authenticity, film scanners were not used, but instead direct optical printing on analogue media was used. The film was shot in three versions - underexposed, normal and overexposed, in order to be able to approximate the conditions of the film. This is the only way to accurately interpret the negative and obtain the color rendition intended by the film manufacturer.[7]

To create specific profiles, the characteristics of historical films, such as Kodak Portra 160 or Agfa Agfacolor 100, were studied and models were created.

The use of presets has become increasingly popular as film production ceases and the cost of maintaining analog equipment rises.[8]

Products

The software is available as a plugin for the most popular photo and video editors, such as DaVinci Resolve, Adobe After Effects, Final Cut, and also as a mobile application for smartphones.

Applications

Dehancer: Color Grading

Dehancer application logo
Dehancer application logo

Image processing application for iPhone, direct heir Degradr, launched October 2022. Includes customizable halation, bloom, film grain, vignette tools, as well as many historical film profiles and custom presets. Allows users to process photos and videos, giving them the appearance of authentic analog images.[13]

This application also featured animated effects that bring the video to life by making small image shifts between adjacent frames, imitating the behavior of real film.

DColorTest is a free research app for iPhone. The application was released in April 2023. It is used to determine the number of colors that users can perceive under different lighting, physical and emotional conditions. This is a measure of color perception that involves short-term memory. The result depends on visual perception and sensitivity to color nuances. [14]

Application was developed specifically to test the hypothesis about the relationship between color perception and the human condition. The collected statistics do not contain personal data and are stored in anonymized form.

Dehancer Benchmark

This benchmark allows users to evaluate the peak performance of their existing hardware/OS compared to other configurations. The measurement results are recommended to be used when selecting equipment or upgrades.

Dehancer Colourist Awards

In September 2023, Dehanser announced an international competition for colorists.[15] Nearly 30,000 industry professionals will be able to be nominated in five categories: feature film, short film, documentary, music video, mobile video (shot on mobile).[16]
