Shortly after 5 am on 14 December 2023, three people in Denmark were arrested and charged with planning a terrorist attack in Denmark. One other person was simultaneously arrested in the Netherlands, while four others currently remain at large and were charged in absentia. Five out of Denmark's 15 police departments took part in operation.[a] The three arrested in Denmark, two men and a younger woman, were put before preliminary questioning at around 7 pm.[1] The judge ruled to give the defendants name potection and for the case to take take place behind so-called "double closed doors",[2] meaning the public will be restrained from access.[3] The plot has been linked to the Danish gang Loyal to Familia.[4]
The news broke at 10 am when Copenhagen Police and PET published a press release, calling for a press confrence to be held at 13 am due to the arrest of individuals arrested due to "suspicion of preparation for a terrorist attack".[5] Before the press confrence, the chairmen of the political parties in the Folketing as well as members of the Jewish community were briefed on the situation,[6] with Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen stating "This is as serious as it gets".[7] Police increased its presence in the Danish capital Copenhagen with special attention towards Jewish sites.[8] Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that several persons "operat[ing] on behalf of" the Palestinian political and military organisation Hamas are involved in the plot.[9] On the same day, four Hamas members were arrested in Germany as well a 57-year old man from Rotterdam, the Netherlands. With initial speculation of a potential link, the PET stated that where was no "direct connection" between the three arrests in Denmark and the ones in Germany and that the 57-year old was "not identical to the previously mentioned person arrested in the Netherlands in the Danish case".[10]
At least one arrest was carried out in the Århus district of Gellerupparken , an area on the goverment's ghetto list due to its high Middle Eastern population,[11] although causation to the terror plot remains unknown.[12][13]

In March 2023, the PET released its annual report on the threat of terrorism against Denmark,[14] emphasising the threat of islamic terrorism, while the Center for Terror Analis (CTA), stated that the Danish terror threat remained "severe". Just the day before the arrests, the PET released another repporting that the threat had increased due to the outbrake of the Israel–Hamas war in October that year.[15]
