Here are examples of files that can and cannot be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons:

  • Green checkmarkY Files you took/created yourself
    Note that all files are Commons are granted permission for others to use, change, and share, including commercially (like selling it).
  • Green checkmarkY Files that others licensed under an approved license
  • Green checkmarkY Files that are either too simple or too old and are in the public domain
  • Blue question mark? Files that include 2D or 3D art (see Commons:Freedom of panorama)
  • Red X symbolN Files that others took/created, and aren't licensed under an approved license
    This includes most files on the Internet.
