Fowler-Scott Library was the library and conference centre for the Gray Cancer Institute. The building was originally the chapel for the Mount Vernon Hospital.[1]
The library in one of three such chapels in Britain constructed in the Art Nouveau style and for this reason, it is a Grade II* listed building and the interior and exterior fittings must be maintained.
In 1986, Mount Vernon Hospital agreed to lease the Chapel to the Gray Laboratory for a peppercorn rent and in 1987, the Cancer Research Campaign agreed that it would be a good idea and they agreed to make a supplementary grant of £50,000 towards conversion of the Chapel. Refurbishment was further delayed by discussions with Hillingdon Council Listed Buildings Department since their constraints on what could be done internally were quite severe.
All the audiovisual equipment has been designed and installed by Boris Vojnovic and his team at the Gray Laboratory. The lighting was dismantled and refurbished to its original glory by Brian Bloomfield and his team in the Gray Laboratory's mechanical workshop.[2]
The main components of the refurbishment programme took place over a period of 6 months in 1988 and were finished just the day before the International Symposium for Jack Fowler was held to mark his retirement in July 1988.
