Please help to write the documentation; this is only a very rough draft.

  • If the Wikidata entry for a subject exists, then typing {{Mastodon user}} should automatically provide the subject's Mastodon user URL; this is typically usable in WP:EXTERNALLINKs.
    • However, as of 20 December 2022, the template is hardwired to use redirects from https://mastodon.social . A technical limitation is that if the subject's Mastodon account is on mastodon.social itself, you have to use the user id as the first parameter, without the @mastodon.social part, e.g. {{Mastodon user|eff}} for https://mastodon.social/@eff.
  • If the Wikidata entry for a subject does not exist, typing {{Mastodon user|subject@instance}} should provide the URL https://mastodon.social/@subject@instance, which should redirect to https://instance/@subject .
    • as of 20 December 2022, the template will not correctly handle non-Wikidata addresses of the form subject@mastodon.social. A current (as of 20 December 2022) workaround is to add the address in Wikidata and then use {{Mastodon user|subject}} here on Wikipedia.
