I would suggest that this page be renamed HOST security module as this is the correct term. Hardware Security Module should redirect to HOST security module. It is a common error to call them hardware. In reality the terms are fairly interchangeable.

Thales (who make HSMs) refer to them as HOST security modules - see http://www.thales-esecurity.com/productsservices/Documents/11653-HSM8000-v2.pdf - however on another page on the Thales web site they also refer to them as Hardware security modules!!


I think that Thales use Host just for marketing purpose. There are HSM and SSM (for Software) two differents specifics things for the same services, and there is Thales's marketing approche that's an other thing.
