Portable Compiled Format (PCF) is a bitmap font format used by X-Server from X Window System in its core font system, and has been used for decades. PCF fonts are usually installed, by default, on most Unix-based operating systems, and are used in terminals such as xterm. PCF fonts replaced Bitmap Distribution Format due to a slight efficiency increase, however most applications have moved on to scalable fonts.[1] The format has emerged no later than 1994 and XServer didn't enjoy strong support for fonts until X11R5 because creators didn't anticipate software requirements at the time and in future.[2]: 197 [better source needed]

The bdftopcf tool may be used to convert from BDF to PCF file format on Unix-based systems.
