Methods in Ecology and Evolution is a peer-reviewed scientific journal focused on advancing new methodologies in ecology and evolution. It began publication in 2010, and is the 5th journal of the British Ecological Society. Methods in Ecology and Evolution is only available online. According to the 2021 Journal Citation Reports, the journal was ranked 10th out of 176 journals in the category "Ecology".[1] Aaron M. Ellison, Natalie Cooper (Natural History Museum), Nicolas Lecomte (Université de Moncton) and Huijie Qiao (Chinese Academy of Sciences) are the current Editors on the journal.
Methods in Ecology and Evolution publishes methodological papers from all areas of ecology and evolution, including statistical and theoretical methods, methods in phylogenetics, and fieldwork methodologies. These papers can be full-length research articles, shorter formal descriptions of hardware and tools or software applications, reviews, or perspectives on the state and development of methods used by ecologists and evolutionary biologists. Methods are defined in the widest terms, and may be analytical, practical, or conceptual.[2]
As well as publishing research papers, the journal encourages the publication of supplementary material such as computer code, methodological tutorials, and explanatory videos.[2] A regular podcast is produced by the editorial office, in which selected authors are asked to discuss their papers in greater depth.[3]
In June 2022, Methods in Ecology and evolution announced that it would be going fully Open Access[4] from January 2023, with all papers submitted to the journal from 6 July 2022 open access on publication. Through Wiley, the journal is part of the Research4Life programme, through which researchers from the most resource-poor nations receive a full or 50% Article Processing Charge waiver. Any unfunded authors who are not eligible for Research4Life waivers can apply for a BES-funded waiver in advance of submission, with priority will be given to researchers without institutional employment, particularly early career and post-doctoral scientists, and to individual researchers who can document that national or institutional support for OA and APCs is unavailable.[5]
