Introduction

Free and open-source software (FOSS) is software available under a license that grants users the right to use, modify, and distribute the software – modified or not – to everyone free of charge. FOSS is an inclusive umbrella term encompassing free software and open-source software. The rights guaranteed by FOSS originate from the "Four Essential Freedoms" of The Free Software Definition and the criteria of The Open Source Definition. All FOSS must have publicly available source code, but not all source-available software is FOSS. FOSS is the opposite of proprietary software, which is licensed restrictively or has undisclosed source code.

The historical precursor to FOSS was the hobbyist and academic public domain software ecosystem of the 1960s to 1980s. Free and open-source operating systems such as Linux distributions and descendants of BSD are widely used, powering millions of servers, desktops, smartphones, and other devices. Free-software licenses and open-source licenses have been adopted by many software packages. Reasons for using FOSS include decreased software costs, increased security against malware, stability, privacy, opportunities for educational usage, and giving users more control over their own hardware.

The free software movement and the open-source software movement are online social movements behind widespread production, adoption and promotion of FOSS, with the former preferring to use the equivalent term free/libre and open-source software (FLOSS). FOSS is supported by a loosely associated movement of multiple organizations, foundations, communities and individuals who share basic philosophical perspectives and collaborate practically, but may diverge in detail questions. Welcome

To coordinate with others on free software issues, see WikiProject Free Software.

Below are tasks that you can help with. On the left are general tasks, where we list articles that need help but for which there is no plan of action, just a general call for attention. On the right we list specific tasks where there is a suggested plan of action, but we need someone with the right knowledge to implement the plan.

General tasks

Welcome!

Welcome to the free and open-source software task force, a project devoted to creating, improving, and maintaining articles related to free and open-source software (FOSS), and bringing them to good or featured article status. The scope of this project extends to articles about:

Always remember to follow Wikipedia conventions, and to be bold!

The FOSS task force is supported by WikiProject Software and WikiProject Computing.

Core tasks

Here are some tasks that have to be done constantly or to almost every article. Further down the page you'll find TODO lists with one-off tasks that need to be done.

Verify the bare minimum

Each article about a free and open-source software project should:

  1. Contain a link to the Free and open-source software portal:
    • add {{Portal|Free and open-source software}} to the "See also" section or the last section of prose in the article body.
    • Alternatively, add {{Portal bar|Free and open-source software}} to the bottom of the page.
  2. Mention that it is free and open-source software in the opening paragraph, preferably in the first sentence
  3. Describe the free software licenses used by the project, preferably in the infobox, with a citation to the project's license
  4. Use {{citation needed}} to tag any unverified statements

Complete tasks on to-do list

Those tasks are the backlog of issues found by other task force members.

Add references

Make sure that your source meets the criteria for reliable sources, especially that they are not self-published (personal blogs, forums, etc.). This project develops its own list of useful, reliable sources and a custom search engine. Feel free to audit and improve the list with other reliable sources you can find.

Improve article links

Many articles containing phrases such as "free software licence" or "free software community", when it is usually better to link to "free software licence" and "free software community" instead of the main free software article.

Assessment

The Assessment department will focus on assessing the quality of Wikipedia's FOSS-related articles. This will aid us in recognising excellent contributions and identifying topics in need of further work.

Stub-, Start-, and B-class assessments can be made by every editor (although generally you should not assess an article on which you have had a major influence). A-class assessment is made within this project, while Good Article and Feature Article assessments require formal review procedures outside of this project.

Assessment should be conducted following these guidelines.

If you would like to help, here are some suggestions for things to do. The date in parentheses is the date on which the task was added.

  1. (2021-03-08) Current and ongoing activities of Free Software Foundation require updating and adding some more description.
  2. (2018-08-27) The Source-available software article needs to be expanded with high-quality secondary sources.
  3. (2007-10-28) The timeline of FSF's and Debian's free software definitions needs to be constructed (see Talk:The Free Software Definition#Timeline: FSD and DFSG)
  4. (2007-09-18) The European Union v. Microsoft (the anti-trust case) article needs to add mentions of FSFE, free software, and Samba.
  5. (2007-09-17) The GNU Compiler Collection article contains no information about how fast/slow or big/small the outputted programs are.
  6. (2007-05-14) The GNU/Linux naming controversy, Emacs, Common Unix Printing System, Ubuntu (operating system) and PaX articles were formerly featured articles, but have since had that status revoked. Maybe it would be easy to get them back up to Featured Article quality.
  7. (2007-04-13) The Player Project needs expansion, particularly someone with knowledge of the project to write about its history, goals, features without turning it back into an advert.
  8. (2007-01-24) Some cleanup, and some aggregation is needed for GNU toolchain
  9. (2006-09-18) Free software should be mentioned in Software engineering

  1. ^ Prose at the Good Article level is not expected to be at a professional level like it is for Featured Articles. Minor grammatical or style issues that do not impact clarity are not prohibitive of GA status.
