3D Movie Tree (stylized as 3d movie tree) is a adult animated sitcom created by Alex Harris for Cartoon Network’s night-time programming block Adult Swim, which revolves around two anthropomorphic tree brothers.

Plot

Adult brothers Maple Tree and Oak Tree try to live a normal life but fail at it. Maple Tree (voiced by Alex Harris) is a tree who lives in Toronto.

Maple is nice, but has a very large ego.

Oak Tree (voiced by Craig Russell) is the younger brother of Maple.

Oak is smarter than Maple and always looking out for him.

Production

Development

Young looking cartoonist, Alex Harris
Alex Harris, creator of 3D Movie Tree.

Alex Harris started his career on YouTube as “dumbmac92”[1] in 2007. He posted content like surreal adult cartoons. The concept of 3D Movie Tree was made in 2008 as a web series, but it used to be called “Tree Brothers” then ended in 2010.

During late 2013, he tried to submit it to MTV but it was rejected.

He would later try to submit it to Adult Swim in 2014 then it was rejected again. Adult Swim told Alex that it was too weird and if he wanted to submit it again, he’d need to make it less weird.

In mid 2017, Alex would submit it to Adult Swim again with a new pilot and then it was accepted. The actual production started on May 7, 2017.

Casting

During high school, Alex Harris was in a friend group called “Obnoxious Street”. One of the members of the group was Craig Russell. He helped with the webseries concept since June 2009. During the start of production, Alex wanted Craig to help with Oak’s voice like he did in the webseries. The other voices on the show are from their friend group Obnoxious Street and also some youtubers helped with the voices.

Animation

In 2008 during Tree Brothers, Alex used flash animation for the webseries, being uploaded to YouTube and Newgrounds. On November 2009, Alex changed the animation program from Adobe Flash to Toon Boom.

Before it switched to Toon Boom, it used to be black and white.

In the show, it’s supposed to look like it’s 3D and 2D.
