Louis the German was a grandson of Charlemagne and son of Louis II. He is alluded to in Proust's description of Prince Faffenheim-Muensterburg-Weiniger in v.3 of In Search of Lost Time. Prince Faffenheim-Meunsterburg-Weinger is a wealthy nobleman who wants nothing more than the vain hope of becoming a member of the Academie.
