OBJECT:PARADISE is a Prague-based performance and poetics collective based in the Czech Republic, formed by writers Tyko Say and Jeff Milton in 2018. The non-profit collective produces anti-poetry happenings, installations, and other multi-media works regarding their manifesto which calls for "poetry readings to be more inclusive, inter-disciplinary and less restricted to art cafes and turtlenecks".[2]

History

OBJECT:PARADISE was unofficially formed in 2018 with the meeting of Tyko Say and Jeff Milton in the Ouky Douky cafe in Prague's Holešovice neighborhood where the two discussed their discontent with the Prague literary scene.[2][3] The two established the collective with the aim to produce events that catered less around the conventions of poetry readings and instead broader practices associated with performance arts[2]. The collective would later deem the practice of their manifesto as a language happening.[4]

OBJECT:PARADISE had its first event at the hostel The Czech Inn on November 8th 2018 with a cast of primarily expat writers in accompaniment with jazz pianist Jenda Pudlák.[5]

On November 13th 2019, Milton, Say, Pudlák and musician Heyme Langbroek, self-released the collective's first album OBJECT:PARADISE Volume 1 at their third event, Channels of Communication. The composition aimed to capture the beatnik-inspired texts that were were being shared at their happenings.[6][7] Later on January 20th 2020, the collective's first documentary, Channels of Communication, which documented the happening, was released.[8]

In July 2020, the collective began their transition from hosting events in pubs and cafes to public spaces, with the objective to reach a larger audience and "to encourage the public to ask, 'is that poetry?'" at their event, Tunnel Vision(s).[9][10] The event was held in the Starý Vítkovský tunel and was attended by over 100 people.[9]

On Halloween 2020, the collective's second film, OBJECT:PRAHA, was released at Prague Microfestival[11] and later in February 2021 was featured at the Versopolis Festival of Hope.[12]

In January 2021, the collective was registered as a non-profit organization with the Czech government. The collective is currently composed of four members: Tyko Say (US), Director of Poetics and Media; Sandra Pasławska (PL), Director of Performance art; Roksan Mandel (TR), Director of Sound; and Jaromír Lelek (CZ) director of Poetics and Czech media.[1]During the Covid-19 Pandemic, the four members wrote the OBJECT:PARADISE manifesto which details 20 mantras to celebrate poetry readings as language happenings, balancing the equal role of sound, language, and performance art in the context of a public space.[4][2]

In April and May 2021, the collective had its first trans-Atlantic collaboration, titled Now Showing with the New York-based Flow Chart Foundation where a curation of texts were projected from a high rise balcony before the Žižkov Television Tower in Prague. The installation featured texts from eight writers: Tyko Say, Marc Fischer, Michael Ashkin, Jason Geistweidt, David Levi Strauss, Kay Rosen, Max Goldfarb, and Norman Douglas. The objective of the projection, which occurred during the Covid-19 Pandemic, was to "bring poetry back to an accessible space: on the way to the store".[9] Tyko Say's piece titled We was in turn projected in Hudson, New York in March of the same year. In February 2022 the collective released their second studio album, OBJECT:PARADISE Volume II, on Seattle-based record label Sifter Grim which features over 20-Prague based artists and focuses primarily on topics concerning Prague's Žižkov neighborhood. [15] The composition was released alongside a documentary, OBJECT:PRAHA II, on the filming of the project.[16][4]

Manifesto

In an interview with the Turkish Magazine Şalom, Sound Director Roksan Mandel writes,

"The OBJECT:PARADISE manifesto is inspired by Artaud, Fluxus, Dada and other avant-garde movements and ideas. Previously, there were events and performances of Bebop jazz and beat poetry. Later, it evolved into a performance art that would never happen again, improvising and taking place at that moment, with activities that included broader concepts of sound, language and performance. The performances have turned into a dynamic form that includes everyone, including the audience."[3]

The OBJECT:PARADISE manifesto was written in 2021 and is composed of twenty mantras, regarding performance, poetics, and sound.[2] [17]
