A user interface markup language is a XML markup used to define a user interface.

There were two pioneers with XML user interface markup languages. XUL (developed by Mozilla) and GladeXML (developed by GNOME). Both Mozilla and GNOME developed similar technologies, independently, and seemingly unaware of each other.
