Simple and Clean
Simple And Clean is a song by J-pop artist Utada Hikaru, and is the theme song to the English language release of the PlayStation 2 video game Kingdom Hearts.
"Simple And Clean" is a b-side on her single release of "COLORS", and is also included on the first Kingdom Hearts soundtrack. The song has been remixed multiple times, with the "PLANITb remix" being the version used as the opening theme of the Western version of Kingdom Hearts.
The song is not simply a literal English version of her song "Hikari" (光, light), and there are some musical differences as well; while composing "Hikari," Utada Hikaru abandoned a hook that would later be used in a song featured on her Deep River album, "Uso Mitai na I Love You" (嘘みたいなI Love You, An 'I love you' like a lie). When she recorded "Simple And Clean," she used the hook for the verses. Hikari was written such that it fit with the theme of the game's storyline, while "Simple And Clean" was only loosely tied with the original Kingdom Hearts.
In addition to serving as the theme song to the Western version of Kingdom Hearts, it is also featured in the Japanese "Final Mix" version of the game, as well as the Game Boy Advance sequel, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories.
An orchestral version of the song was created for use in the game during certain scenes and was also used for several of the trailers for Kingdom Hearts II.
The lyrics are the singer telling her boyfriend about her feelings and exploring her insecurities.
