Forces on hulls

Should the formal scope on this article be expanded to encompass force on hulls? It would be nice to discuss heeling in multihulls, too. HLHJ (talk) 15:15, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for your interest in improving this article, HLHJ. Technically, the image, titled "Aerodynamic forces in balance with hydrodynamic forces on a close-hauled sailboat", has all the pertinent forces illustrated, albeit for a monohull.
Regarding multihulls, we're really talking about form stability to resist heeling and and the role of foils to resist lateral movement. Other forces on hulls would include bouyancy and forward resistance, which quickly get one into a hydrodynamic treatise on hulls and thereby a separate article. Hulls have other behaviors, that include planing or being lifted on foils.
Recent sailing magazines have some interesting articles on foiling monohulls. See: Sail, "Foiling Monohulls", Peter Nielsen, November 4, 2015, Yachting, "What will foiling do for you?—Why foils will change sailing forever", Matthew Sheahan, February 15, 2016 and the April 2017 issue of Sail: "The New Frontier—Foils on monohulls are here to stay, but the way forward is uncertain", Charles J. Doane.

Thank you for the article links, User:HopsonRoad, they're interesting. The dynamic control systems discussed in those articles are a whole other kettle of fish.
You're right, the article is long enough already. I was thinking of the ama of a Pacific proa, which (mostly) hangs from the aka to counteract the heel, punching through waves if they get in the way; it would be interesting to contrast it with Atlantic proas, leaning on buoyant amas. Then of course the main hull of a traditional proa is asymmetrical and the entire thing acts as a foil. A racing catamaran, say, is obviously quite different. Or a baidarka-like narrow marathon kayak, or a playboat. I can't spot an article with the scope "Forces on hulls", but perhaps the subject is a bit broad. Hull (watercraft) really doesn't cover it; planing (boat) covers parts of it. One could create Forces on hulls; do you think it would be a good idea? HLHJ (talk) 00:27, 31 March 2017 (UTC)
