Sharmila Anandasabapathy is a Sri Lankan-American physician and researcher in the field of gastroenterology. She is a Professor of Medicine in gastroenterology and is a Vice President of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. She serves as the Director of Baylor Global Health and the Baylor Global Innovation Center at Baylor College of Medicine, where she oversees Baylor's global programs and affiliations. Dr. Anandasabapathy also serves as an Adjunct Professor of Bioengineering at Rice University in Houston, TX, and is the inventor of the SmartPodTM and current CMO for Xploration Health.[1][2][3][4]
Education
Anandasabapathy attended Yale University from 1989-1993 where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature. She earned her Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree with distinction in research from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1998. While a medical student, Anandasabapathy was a member of the American Medical Student Association and Physicians for Social Responsibility.[5]
Career and Research
Anandasabapathy was an intern and resident at the New York-Presbyterian Hospitals, Weill Cornell Medical Center, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for three years. In 2004, she completed her gastroenterology fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical and did advanced training in the endoscopic management of Barrett's esophagus and esophageal cancer.[5] After the fellowship, she joined the faculty at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She was also a faculty member at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center for three years between 2005 and 2008. After which, she served as Chief of Endoscopy until 2013 at Mount Sinai Medical Center. Since that time, she has been a professor of medicine in gastroenterology at Baylor College of Medicine and practice gastroenterology and endoscopy as an attending physician at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center.[1][6][7][8] In addition to her primary appointment at Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Anandasabapathy also holds an adjunct appointment in Bioengineering at Rice University in Houston, Texas.[3]
Anandasabapathy's research and clinical care focus on the early detection of Esophageal cancer and the use of novel, lower-cost diagnostic modalities for Gastrointestinal cancer detection in globally underserved settings.[9] She has been the principal investigator on multiple grants funded by the National Institutes of Healthand National Cancer Institute. Through these grants, she has led multiple international clinical trials focused on endoscopic diagnosis of esophageal and gastric cancer. These trials have been conducted in the United States, Africa, China, Honduras, and Brazil.[10][11]
In her roles as Director of Baylor Global Health and Baylor Global Innovation Center she seeks to develop innovative solutions to global health problems, particularly safe surgery and non-communicable diseases, partnering with clinicians, policy makers, and engineers (Rice University, NASA, etc.) worldwide.[4]
Anandasabapathy is founder, inventor, and Chief Medical Officer of Xploration Health, a company spun out of Baylor College of Medicine to commercialize the SmartPodTM platform. The SmartPodTM is a deployable, expandable shipping container-based medical facility that solves the critical dual-purpose need for access to quality healthcare in response to emergencies (pandemics, natural disasters) and for everyday community health in underserved and under-resourced areas.[12][6][3]
Publications
Dr. Anandasabapathy has published numerous papers and articles in various journals about gastroenterology and cancer. She has also been involved in the development of guidelines for Barrett's esophagus, published in 2013. Dr. Anandasabapathy's publications and research have been used in advanced imaging technologies for the detection of gastrointestinal cancers.[9][10][11][13][14][15]
Honors, Awards, and Recognition
Anandasabapathy was named a fellow by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy in 2011 and by the American Gastroenterological Association in 2013. In 2017, she was a Texas Executive Women 'Women on the Move' award recipient. Dr. Anandasabapathy was also featured as a USAID Female Innovator, acknowledged as one of the Influential Women in Houston, as well as recognized as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor and Texas Magazine Top Gastroenterologist. She is also the current Chair of the AGA Women's Committee and as Associate Editor of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.[16][17][3]
