Welcome 2 America is a posthumous album by American musician Prince, released through NPG Records on July 30, 2021. It is the first full previously-unreleased studio album of Prince material to be released posthumously.[1]
Background
The album was recorded in the spring of 2010, while Prince and his backing band were preparing for the Welcome 2 tour. However, it would remain shelved for eleven years.[2]
On April 7, The Estate of Prince Rogers Nelson announced a vinyl reissue of the 1998 album The Truth for Record Store Day 2021 on June 12.[3] The next day, they announced the forthcoming release of the previously unreleased album Welcome 2 America featuring Tal Wilkenfeld on bass, Chris Coleman on drums, Morris Hayes on keyboards, and vocals from New Power Generation singers Liv Warfield, Shelby J. and Elisa Fiorillo on July 30.[4][5][6][7][8][9]
Songs
"Hot Summer" was premiered on Minnesota public radio station 89.3 The Current's website on June 7, 2010, Prince's 52nd birthday, prior to the album's intended release.[10] "Same Page, Different Book" was streamed as audio only over a static video on 3rdeyegirl's YouTube channel in January 2013.[11] "1000 Light Years from Here" was released in an alternative version with new lyrics and arrangements in 2015 on Hit n Run Phase Two as a 3:05 coda to the track "Black Muse". An alternative version of "When She Comes" with different lyrics was also released on Hit n Run Phase Two.
