Background
In 1955, the Legislative Assembly of Singapore was created with 25 elected seats. [1] This was an increase of the 9 seats in the Legislative Council of Singapore election held 4 years prior. [2]. Geylang was created by the delimiting of the preceding Katong Constituency of the Legislative Council. The constituency was split into Geylang East and Geylang West at the next next election.
